As demonstrated by Mr. Dube’s “Veteran’s Application for Increased Compensation Based on Unemployability”, Mr. Dube filed his individual unemployability application as of September 2017. Mr. Dube’s application demonstrates, however, that he has not held substantially gainful employment since May 2017. The Department grants unemployability when the veteran cannot secure substantially gainful employment as a result of a service-connected disability and the veteran’s disability rating is at 60% or more. 38 C.F.R. § 4.16(a).…

The Department of Veterans Affairs has been helping veterans pursue their educational goals since 1944, when the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act commonly known as the GI Bill was signed into law. This act has been noted as being “one of the most significant pieces of legislation ever produced by the federal government” (www.benefits.va.gov) and one that has significantly impacted the millions of men and women that have served our country. There are serious problems with the Department of Veterans Affairs that need to change to give adequate benefits to those that need the Department’s services. There have been many articles telling of the hardships that veterans have had to go through to get the benefits that they deserve for fighting and getting injured in their service to the United States Armed Forces. Common sense seems to dictate that the government would take care of the veterans that served their country, and yet it seems only the opposite is happening. There have been reports of many veterans having to fight for months, if not years, to receive the proper care with benefits from the Department even after having fought the wars for our country. All of this extra fighting…

The training, discipline, and work ethic veterans receive from the military help them in the path to a successful college career. Having these characteristics set veterans ahead of their fellow non- veteran students who do not uphold these mannerisms. Yet we often read about veterans barely getting by at college, flushing away their G.I. bill, and failing at life. Although previous military affiliation proves to be beneficial, I have learned first hand of the many challenges veterans face while attending college. While in the military, veterans are accustomed to very detailed and structured days.…

The Armed Forces and Veterans Administration’s shameful treatment of many returning Veterans, who served our country in the Iraqi and Afghanistan conflicts, has prompted me to write to express my outrage According to a NY Times article dated April 16, 2016 titled “Report Finds Sharp Increase in Veterans Denied V.A. Benefits;” the Veterans Administration has denied benefits to six percent of returning veterans in these wars. The reason focuses on the issue that the military charged them with misconduct and gave them “bad paper” discharges. These are less than honorable discharges. The percentage of Marines is ten percent. Consequently, the Department of Veterans Affairs does not consider them veterans and has denied them permanent health care,…

Because of the physical and emotional trauma that soldiers experience after returning home from deployment, they are unable to perform tasks such as obtaining jobs, as employers often view and determine their injuries as “disabilities”. Nicholas Johnson, a former specialist in the Arkansas Army National Guard, who spent a year in Iraq in 2006, stated “I can’t get a good job now because . . . I have to be upfront and say I have this disability, I have a tore-up back,” he said “So now, the factories here in Topeka, where I live now, they’re like: ‘Oh, wow, he has military experience.…
