Personal Narrative Essay: My Trip To New York City

Improved Essays
During the end of my senior year in High School, an opportunity arose to travel to New York City, with my friend Zach. My school’s basketball team was participating in a National tournament at Yeshiva University, where my friend Zach’s brother had an apartment nearby in Washington Heights. Hearing about the safety issues in the Heights, my parents didn’t want me roaming around the city without any adult supervision. With the backing of my Uncle Richard, who live in the Upper East Side, I began to plan my trip. Brainstorming with my uncle Richard helped evolve a meaningful itinerary, but I could not get Zach on board with this goal, because of his “play it by year” mentality. With the contours of my trip in place, Zach and I boarded the plane …show more content…
My uncle was slightly uneasy about us staying in the Heights, insisting on escorting us from La Guardia Airport to Zach’s brother’s apartment. When we arrived at the apartment my uncle got out of the cab and exclaimed “Jacob are you sure you wanna stay here. It looks like the cops on the stoop are monitoring nearby gang activity.” Uncle Rich proceeded to tell a few jokes regarding his experience with bed bugs in his own apartment, and had Zach’s brothers cracking up. After giving us all a good laugh, my uncle said his good byes and headed …show more content…
I called Rich, but my phone’s low battery abruptly interrupted our communication. All alone in the middle of New York City with a dollar and a non - working cell phone, I became overwhelmed with the vastness and emptiness of the city. Since the character always overcomes this adversity, it convinces me that I can do the

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…
