My Learning Experience: The First Year Of College

Good Essays
The first year of college is always a learning experience for many kids.Mine was a huge eye opener on what it is like to be independent. The transition from high school to college wasn 't exactly the easiest for me. In college you don 't have parents and attendence cordinators making sure your are in class. It 's something that you have to make a prority if you plan to suceed. One of the major things I struggled with was getting up and going to class. I have always been a pretty intelligent individual, so high school was a breeze for me. I barely had to put in effort to excel in school. When I got to Bloomington I was stuck in the habit of not completely and whole heartedly applying myself. Another difficulty I faced was due to may lack of …show more content…
I would understand the information in class then go home to do the projects and homework and find myself lost not knowing what to do. I never really used my resourses available to me or my professor 's office hours. I would a lot of times try and look up the information on the internet and figure it out myself. Another class I struggled with was MATH-M 25. I have always been pretty decent at math , but I never really understood the way my professor taught. He wouldn 't go into much detail. He would just show an example on the board then move on. So i would go home to do the online assignment then not e able to finsih it. Due to my lack of attendence in SPH-I I failed the class. Since it was such an easy class I would many times blow it off and not go. Second semster I got a lot of W 's because I procrastinated so long to schedule classes. I would enroll in a class to secure my spot, then have to drop it to fit other classes i needed in my schedule. In SPEA-H 124 I missed more classes then the allowed amount so I failed. Some classes were online and some were in-class. A few times I had thought it was suppose to be an online class and didnt show up for class. I also failed FOLK-F 111. A good portion of the grade was based on writing essays. I havent always been the stringest writer so i struggled in this area of the class. In high school I had never failed a class before. The grades i recieved for my first year of college …show more content…
One thing I plan to do to keep organized is make a weekly shedule. Making a shedule will assure i dont forget to do any assignments. This will also help me evenly distribute my time porpotional. Last year i found myself spending too much time socializing and not enough time focusing on school. I also plan to dedicate some time to review each classes material everyday. This will help me better understand and retain the information. Also when it comes test day i won 't need to spend the whole night before cramming. Another thing I plan to change for next year is the time i go to bed. Last year i would stay up all hours of the night then not be able to wake up for class. I have already been starting to go to bed semi-early to start to get use to waking up at a decent time. Checking my email daily is something that ive been trying to get in the routine of. This will assure that i dont miss out on any changes or extra assignments. Next year I plan to establish a better relationship with my professors. This will show my dedication towards the course. Also if anything was to come up and i miss an assignment, or class they would be more willing to work with me to make-up what i missed. I have the capability and knowledge to become an outstanding standing student. I realize my mistakes i made last year, and i am fully prepared to transform in to a totally different student than i was last year if im

I think I am good with grammar and mechanics, but when it comes to time management or organization then forget it. I usually struggled with writing projects in high school, mostly due to my lack of interest and my great ability to avoid writing assignments until the very last minute. My college experience so far has already…

Since I was always sleeping in class when I did show up, they thought I did not know the material or did not even bother to try. However, they were wrong. I would just finish my work ahead of time or the night before so that I would not need to do it in class. My sophomore year my school offered AP classes, but even then I slept through them. This pattern continued my senior year.…

I did succeed in making my grades but by the last months of the semester I realize that the stress that came with procrastination wasn’t worth in ad I started working on time management. In high school the words time management are repeated but never really explains. I grew up hating the simple idea of time management, but I have since learned that is means balance. It is easy to think of staying in and doing nothing but studies, but true time management is the balancing the responsibilities you must complete and the things you want to do. This realization has taught me that I can have a “fun” college experience without forgetting the reason I am at a university.…

I felt like I was spinning my wheels because after a whole year went by I still didn’t have any real credits on my transcript (after I failed a couple of classes and had to withdraw from a few more). It was also a huge waste of money to only attend part-time. I was paying for a lot of classes that never made it on to my transcript. This time around, I want to make the most of Student 2 every semester and the financial aid I receive, so that I can move on to a four-year university after just two years. I will also need to be sure to attend class sessions regularly.…

At first my priorities weren 't where they were supposed to be, and I realized my grades were going to suffer if I did not change. A big part of college is maturing and getting your priorities straight, and that’s one big thing I’ve learned so far. College really makes you grow up fast because you are on your own and your parents aren’t there to be on top of you. In High School, especially cathiloc school, the teachers…

To put it frank it was a good feeling and amusing when I passed math every year in high school because I really didn’t pay too much attention or even focus as much as I should have at certain times, since I wanted to be stubborn and ignorant. There were times where I would just decide I didn’t want to learn the lessons because they were either being taught difficultly, lack of total interest and or it didn’t seem to be useful in my life for what I planned on doing. Looking back now I can admit I was wrong for having that kind of mind set which I will be going more into depth in another paragraph about the usefulness of math. It was also during that time that I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. For instance, one of my biggest weaknesses is my comprehension but thanks to tutoring and hard work I was able to improve myself to the point where I know what needs to be done to make sure I completely understand the problem and what it is asking.…

I also had fallen into becoming a procrastinator my second semester of college. Pushing my homework and assignments off was one of the biggest mistakes I have made throughout my first year of college. Once I started this course, I was still in the horrible habit of pushing my responsibilities off, but after my first essay was completed, I soon realized that my professor was not going to tolerate. The way the class went was, either you do the assignments or you do not get a grade at all.…

My attitude and academics didn't change by much in my sophomore year. I was still invited to remedial classes and I didn't believe that I could improve by much anymore. I would ask my friend during class to explain a segment of the topic but whenever I would ask for help, my teacher would tell my friend not to do so. I felt no improvement even if I attended remedial classes and tried. I had partially given up on improving in math.…

Since moving to this new area really demoralized me I didn’t want to do anything in class but put my hood up and sleep. She inspired me and taught me that I could overcome my social obstacles that would also help me with my academics. Another teacher that really inspired me was my drafting class teacher Mr. Morales. At first I didn’t even know why I was in that class I never liked drafting and I just needed the credits. At first I would just skip all my classes and only show up to class about 2 days a week if that.…
