I have a very high performing staff that helps in all aspects of the business and really do an amazing work. One of the things that I struggle with is that at times I feel a lack of commitment to the organization to what I feel. This is manifest as some of my exempt employees look to leave as soon as the required time comes up each day. There is always work that can be done and I love to stay and work on tasks that while not urgent, need to be completed in the next day or two. My personality is that I will stay and get as much done as possible. I am working on balance as part of my performance improvement plan. As part of this is realizing that it is ok for my staff to go home when the day is over, even if there are some things that could be done, but the items are not

While I consider myself to be a natural leader who is skilled at building and leading teams I am, for all my abilities, not a very effective delegator. Often, to ensure accuracy and completion of a task, I tend to take on the bulk of the responsibility. Getting too emotionally connected is another weakness I struggle to overcome. As a professional in the private sector I discovered that what I believed was one of my greatest strengths, others identified as a weakness. For example, early in my career, as an Administrator for a government contractor, my manager told me that I should be careful of the way that I always look out for the “underdog” and that it would creep up to hurt me in the future.…
