Personal leadership / management style analysis During my first few weeks in the field experience course, I have noticed the complexity of leadership and management that is involved in the work field. Both, a leader and a manager are very important people in an organization. According to Collins (2001), managers and leaders “exist in different forms, roles and responsibilities”; as a result, Five Level Hierarchy exists, where level one has highly capable individuals, two is contributing team member, three is competent manager, four is an effective leader, and finally five is an executive. A great leader must be an effective communicator in order to lead a group of people in order to accomplish a goal or vision.…

Also, the situation in which this type of leadership is effective, and the situation in which I was operating, match up very well. This is best exemplified in the computer work that was done for the project. One of my out of class followers had previous computer experience from a summer job that he held for two years in a row, so he was assigned the task, and was left pretty much to do his thing, as he knew best what needed to be done. I did stop in to check up on him frequently, but this utilized his internal locus of control, and exemplifies my consideration of his relative expertise in the area, and his interest in the job to which I assigned him. All of these three styles are from different models, but they are really very similar, in every one the leader is fairly participative, but reserves decision making authority, and has a high concern for production, and a moderate to high concern for his…

Additionally, Errol’s responses brought forth a question that resurfaces many aspects of social justice and advocacy work: Power and the illusion of power. Earlier in the semester we visited Paulo Freire and Myles Hortons’ book, We Make the World by Walking, and examined the flaws of charismatic leadership and certain charismatic leaders: Overly charismatic leaders may see themselves as the driving force behind a movement and overlook how the people, in fact, are the ones who carry the momentum and propel the movement. Empowering people should not be seen as giving something to those that doesn’t exist. The illusion of power is when people misinterpret leadership and empowerment for being a savior to those who are “vulnerable.” Instead, as…

In terms of leadership style, I would consider myself more towards social leadership that focused more on teamwork, resolving disputes and providing support (Myers, 2013). Instead of directing the other group members on what to do, I distributed my authority with my group members by giving them the opportunity to voice their ideas as well as involving them in decisions making processes. I believed that group members felt more appreciated when their suggestions were acknowledged which then enhanced more creative and productive thoughts. This was due to the fact that brainstorming that involved the entire group encourages and stimulates ideas from different individuals (Nemeth, Personnaz, Personnaz & Goncalo,…
