Leadership Style Reflection Paper

My current leadership style can be described as management by exception-passive. Although it happens to work well within my current work center, this leadership style will not always be appropriate. The problem is that I don’t necessarily use this leadership style because it fits the needs of my work center, but because it’s within my comfort zone. Below are just a few of the areas in which I need to improve as leader to reach my three to five-year vision for myself.
Over the next three to five years I hope to improve my leadership effectiveness using the concepts I explored throughout each of the ILE module exercises. As stated in my module three entry, I am task oriented and tend to put getting the job done ahead of fostering relationships

Using the RTLM to assess my current leadership style reinforced what I learned in previous lessons, that I lack in building relationships as well as in developing, motivating, and inspiring others. Using the model, I tied these faults into the personality sub-concept, more specifically, relationship management and people-relevance. Being more effective in these two areas will require me to address every single area previously mentioned above. I must seek to establish rapport early on with my co-workers, foster working relationships using the 5 C’s, properly address areas of improvement through DACing, and applying negotiation techniques as needed. In my module seven entry I discussed the importance of using the RTLM at all levels of leadership. Self-awareness is a vital part of self-development; therefore, I believe, next to communication, this is one of the most valuable concepts to share with others. In order to maintain trust and relevance as a leader I will undoubtedly have to reassess where I stand as a leader over the next few years. On a professional level, I hope that following this plan will build me into a more transformational leader, one that is viewed as someone who truly cares about the development of those around me. This plan will require me to address issues within my unit which often cause distress and lower morale among the team members. Therefore, these actions will hopefully foster an environment which values honest feedback and promotes the development of others. If all goes I planned, I suppose I will celebrate by thanking by all those who supported me along the
