In the article, Planning for success: setting SMART goals for study, the author gives clear and precise directions aimed towards students of midwifery, however, these guidelines can be adapted to create a successful plan for any circumstances. As the author, Karen Werle Lee, pointed out many of us are going to school, working full time jobs, and have personal lives that may be very demanding and stressful. In order to manage these demands in one’s life, “the key is to create a plan for success” (Werle Lee, 2010). To do this successfully, one has to set goals to prioritize and manage their time. Understanding the difference between a goal, wish, or an idea is the first step to creating an obtainable goal. According to Werle Lee, “a goal is a dream with a deadline,” so in order, to turn one’s wishes and idea into a goal there must be a workable plan to achieve it. When setting any goals, they need to be SMART. SMART is an acronym that means the goal needs to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound. By rehearsing the presentation with the visual aid, the length of the presentation can be gauged as well as being able to maintain “an appropriate speaking pace” (Billings & Kowalski, 2009). Since the presentation with be in power point format special attention will be given to the color, layout, graphics and font of the slides. While complete sentences are not needed in a power point presentation, bullet points with correct punctuation and capitalization, while avoiding abbreviations and jargon is advisable.
