Leadership Qualities/Style

As identified by the Kouzes and Posners five practices of exemplary leadership S-LPI test, my top five behaviors were: set a personal example, actively listen to diverse viewpoints, follow through on promises, treat others with respect, and express appreciation for people 's contributions. These top five results are all leadership qualities I value and envision in a leader. To reiterate from my S-LPI and Strengths Reflection and Analysis here is why I feel those qualities are important: 1. I feel that setting a personal example is such an important part of being a leader. The group watches your behavior and if you are a leader who puts in the time and effort to get things done, or help others, then I believe

When I was in high school I can’t say that I had the knowledge of all the leadership terms I know today, but what I did understand back then as a captain was that actions could speak louder than words (especially with high school girls who don’t like being told what to do). This goes back to leading by example, I knew that my teammates watched how I handled situations, so I made sure my behavior modeled what I expected out of them. Something as simple as showing up early to practice or helping underclassman carry equipment were behaviors I displayed so that I didn’t have to tell others what to do, because my actions had already shown them. The group process activity consisted of me leading a group therapy session for classmates. I had the group complete a painting of a picture of a being in nature that survives in a harsh environment: a flower in a sidewalk; a fish at the bottom of the ocean; a creature in the desert. The group then shared their painting and discussed how in their own life they have adapted to situations and survived in a harsh environment. This activity was used to enhance coping skills and it was a fun way to engage them in an expressive activity. I liked that activity because it allowed me to facilitate a positive group discussion and environment, which is an important energy a leader should be able to provide for a group. During our problem based learning class each member was made to be the leader for the week. My responsibility for this week was to keep the group on task and to again facilitate open communication and opportunities for group growth towards organized goals. Finally, one of my most rewarding experiences as a leader was when I led an amputee exercise group on fieldwork. It was such a humbling opportunity to bring

Growing up, leadership has always played a huge role in my life. It has helped me grow as a person and allowed me to learn new skills. In middle school, I enjoyed working with my peers to organize events and help others. For example, as a member of my school’s choir, I took the opportunity to help organize concerts, design brochures and make posters to inform the school community about upcoming concerts and events. In addition, I took part in the fundraiser to help raise money for our music department at Carson.…

Numerous studies have shown that a healthy workplace environment improves quality care to patients, and increases the productivity of an institution (Registered Nurses Association of Ontario [RNAO], 2013). This can be achieved through an effective interprofessional collaboration and teamwork among health care providers (RNAO, 2013). In the current healthcare setting, multiple professionals collaborate to provide an exceptional patient-centred care. It is inevitable that one discipline leads other caregivers to resolve patients’ health problem. An exemplary leader should not only promote interprofessional collaboration among the followers, but also should encourage others to lead when his or her expertise is needed.…

Another time that I have taken a leadership role is when our sideline cheer team had a booth at the Water Festival. I took the morning shift and when I got there I had all of the materials but only me and my coach had shown up and she still had to head back to the school to get the things we were selling. So while she went and got the stuff I stayed at the booth and lead it by myself until my teammates came and helped. I decided to be a leader in this situation because I knew that it was what I had to do to help my coach out so that she could get her stuff done. I believe that by leading the booth for a few hours I helped my coach accomplish what she had to do for the day and helped my team by sitting at the booth fundraising to help pay for some of our debts.…

The most effective of use of my leadership skills occurred when I was a member of marching band. During my band career I was both section and wood wind captain. This role put me in charge of a large amount of the band members and gave me more responsibility than I had previously experienced. There was one particular year when the band had undergone a number of changes. Our music director, band director, professional staff, marching director, and many other authoritative figures we had worked with left and the band took a new path.…

One character trait that I find fits me well is realistic. I set my goals high and work hard to reach them, but I also make sure that my goal can be reached. I believe it is worse to fail a goal you set that was too demanding of you than to succeed and keep aspiring higher with time. To be realistic is a significant trait that everyone should own. It allows one to live up to their greatest potential and to constantly improve themselves.…

From someone not under the responsibility of a leadership role, it may seem like a wonderful job, since they can escape from the usual workload that a non-leader has to put up with, and have authority over others. Yet, they tend to overlook the amount of dedication and self-evaluation that a leader has to go through in order for their group to succeed. One must better and uphold themselves to a high standard in order to be an efficient leader, and not for power alone. They must have a wide knowledge of their position and patience to help others in case an issue or situation arises. When things go wrong, the leader, not the group, is blamed, and often is the one that pays for the consequences that their peers have done under their watch.…

Leadership is crucial to the success of any team, business, or group that strives to reach a common goal. Leadership is so crucial to success, that any group cannot function without some sort of leader. Often people are the most qualified for this position among their peers but they are unsure on how to handle certain situations. They can easily make fatal mistakes that jeopardize their group or they can make transformational benefits to their group. At the beginning of my senior football season, I read “The Team Captain’s leadership Manual” by Jeff Janseen.…

During group projects, I have a tendency to make sure that all the work that needs to be done gets done. I also like to make sure that everyone is okay with the work that I have done. This is much easier when others view me as a leader. I know that they are respectful of my input and believe that it is good enough to achieve our common goal. When others view me as a leader, it is easier for me to get work done because I think less about what others think and accomplish what needs to be done.…

When I was five years old, my biggest dream was to someday become an astronaut and fly to the moon. Obviously, that has altered between growing up and with NASA not planning on sending anyone anytime soon off of Earth. Everybody has goals; without them, what is the use of trying to do anything? Ordinarily, high schoolers will have similar goals in life, such as buying their first car, becoming a great successful lawyer or doctor, etc. My goals are plain on the outside, but also can seem a bit diligent to achieve when looking more in depth.…
