My Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI)

1. Leadership, to me, means giving people the desire, direction, and resources needed to reach an objective. Leaders should inspire others to want to work towards an end. Additionally, we should provide them with the path to reach the finish line. Finally, we must equip our people with the tools necessary to complete their mission. Throughout my career, I have experienced leaders of varying effectiveness. Everyone may be a leader, but some are more effective than others. Unfortunately, a number of the leadership influences in my career have demonstrated poor leadership. Although I have learned a great deal from the strong leaders, I have learned far more about how not to lead from the poor ones. Early in my career, many of my superiors …show more content…
Despite the fact that my Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) feedback report shows that my observers are generally in agreement with my own understanding of my behaviors, there are a few differences. The ability to identify how our views differ, combined with the helpful responses to the essay questions, has opened my eyes to several behaviors that need attention. The results of my LPI confirmed what I suspected would be my weaker areas of leadership. As an introvert, I have the tendency to keep to myself and not express myself well. While these qualities may have been acceptable for a non rate or a junior petty officer, I understand that I must work on improving my communication skills to be a proficient senior leader. Consequently, the Leadership Behaviors that I want to improve all involve verbal expression. The behaviors that I chose are Asking for feedback on how my actions affect other people’s performance, Showing others how their long-term interests can be realized by enlisting a common vision, and Challenging people to try out new and innovative ways to do their …show more content…

Once I know what they want to accomplish, I can provide guidance on what they need to do to reach their goals. Likewise, I can provide the resources, such as schools or shop assignments, necessary for the success of the individual and, in turn, the

In order to be an exemplary leader the authors, Kouzes and Posner, (2012), describe five practices that need to be implemented. Each practice defines leadership and what a leader should strive to perfect in being successful. To model the way shares the same concept of practicing what you preach, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). If you want your subordinates to have a strong work ethic a leader must practice the same, by setting the example in order for others to follow, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). As a leader you must be willing to roll up your sleeves and put forth the effort, your actions will set the pace, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012).…

Throughout history the National Honor Society has become synonymous with the best of the best. A school club that has built a legacy on students who exemplify the ideals of leadership, service, character, and citizenship. To even be considered for a group of this nature would be an honor within itself. Leadership is simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization however, I believe leadership to be much more than simply being in charge. True leadership is simply more than being bossy and I have learned this through my experiences within boy scouts.…

When I took the SLPI survey I did not know or understand the five categories or how the survey would be use. To get the most out of the survey one must answer the questions honestly. I plan on taking the information I learned about my leadership practices and make some changes when I return to work. This experience has taught me that leadership is not something that is in one’s genes, rather something that can be learned and grown from their experiences. I will work hard to grow my experiences and skills so I can be the best leader I can be for…

Leadership is providing direction to a group of people that may be seeking or lacking greater information. Through powerful leaders, the ability to transfer knowledge among similar generations takes patience and clarity. Without the existence of strong examples, confusion and misunderstanding would occur in young minds. As my peers and I are beginning to mature, we are transitioning from being influenced by a leader to becoming an important role model to others. Leadership is exemplified in my life through influencing the lives of younger generations, as well as through personal achieved acts.…

To get these traits in my group, I must be aware of my personal strong leadership practices as well as my weak ones in order to improve them. I’ve found that some of my strong leadership practices include, “fostering cooperative rather than competitive relationships among people I work with,” “praising people for a job well done,” “following through on promises and commitments I make in this organization,” and I “treat others with dignity and respect.” (Insights) Some of the practices I believe I need to improve on are, “keeping current on events and activities that might affect our organization,” “finding ways to get feedback on how my actions affect other people’s performance,” and “taking initiative in experimenting with the way we can do things in our organization.” (Insights) Self awareness is one of the best traits to have as a leader and realizing from these practices what I need to work on and what I do well will only make me that much stronger as a…

Definition of Leadership The definition of leadership I most identify with and try to emulate is that of GENERAL George Washington. He believed in his men and along with that respect came the expectation that he believed in them therefore he expected them to come through. He states “if there are no consistent response in terms of guidance and discipline, we will eventually lose our edge as leaders.” Once we lose our edge or the respect of those we lead we have effectively lost our ability to lead. When that happens it is near imposable to regain.…

Leadership is both a science and an art. Good leadership requires an accurate sense of self, a well-communicated vision, the ability to earn the trust of others and the capability to take effective action. In order to “build your house of leadership” your actions must inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more. (Duren, Lec. 2). Throughout the semester, I have learned that some of the five Kouzes and Posner leadership practices in The Leadership Challenge come naturally to me while others do not.…
