According to dictionary.com a leader is “a guiding or directing head, as of an army, movement, or political group”. A leader is one who will make a mistake then admit that they made the mistake. First, my mom. She was in high school band at Zachary when she was younger. She played brass. I want her to be proud of my accomplishes. Next, there are a few people in our band and leadership that have led me to wanting to do this. First, Amanda. My dreams are similar to hers. I want to go to LSU, and become a band director. Seeing how she wasn’t afraid to say something and get us to what we need to be doing has made me want to have that kind of personality of not being afraid. Next, Johnathan. He was my first section in the band. Then he went on to be drum major. He inspired me by when he was section leader, he would always give us pep talks and encourage us. He could tell when someone was having a bad day and he would talk to them. Lastly, Marley was my section leader this year. There are a few things that drives me to wanting to be a better section leader. For example, on days it was the woodwinds day to clean she would just tell everyone what to do. She would hardly clean herself, she would just tell everyone what to do then talk or if she saw you not doing something, she would give you something else to

I hold the highest leadership position in Brookwood High School Bronco Marching Band. The band has 300 members, and my job is to keep time by conducting, lead the band during football games, and provide verbal commands throughout the season and during rehearsals. In addition, I have the responsibility of keeping the energy of the band section, actively engaging in both the football game and the interest of the band. Most importantly, I am a visual representation of the music and passion that the band performed. Through my actions, the band could play from the heart and collectively we can create something being than oneself.…

Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. To be a section leader is like being given a lump of clay and being told to mold into the Statue of David.…

A section leader has to be a good teacher to instruct the rookies and if really needed then returning marchers. Humbleness is an important quality of a leader because being a section leader does not mean you are the best and you are higher than others; all it means is that Mr. Oubre gave it to you. Compassion because this are just kids, and this is just marching band, also you want to build friendships not dominance. One would need confidence because a section leader should set the example for the section and play loud and proud. Section leaders need respect from their peers because nobody listens to somebody they do not respect, especially if that person is a high schooler.…

Potential Vice-President of the Class of 2018 As stated by John C. Maxwell, “A leader is on who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Through my vice-presidency during my sophomore year in high school, multiple band leadership roles, and experience with assisting children during Vacation Bible School as a group leader for various summers, I have become a skilled leader. Additionally, I tend to be known as the kind of student who is looked up to by many due to my high grades, my caring personality, my determination, and my ability to follow instructions.…

As a marching band section leader one must be responsible for an entire section of instruments. As clarinet section leader, I am involved with teaching and mentoring a group of fifteen students. I have always been involved in band (since sixth grade) and as a senior, I felt I had valuable knowledge about the instrument that needed to be bequeathed, prompting me to be involved with the leadership process. Band camp is a two week process in which students learn drill (spots on the field), during this time students spent about 100+ hours focused on marching band. About half of that time was spent in small sectionals, just the clarinets learning from me.…

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” -- John C. Maxwell. Being the drum major this past year, I have learned a lot about being a leader within the band. I would like to continue this position so I can keep the band on the great path it seems to follow. Leaders shouldn’t be perfect, that is the worse possible thing for them to be.…

Being a section leader in band has not only taught me the skills necessary for leading a section of the band, but it has taught me the skills necessary for being an effective leader in general. The role I inherited as a section leader was to oversee and teach my section, complete any jobs that the band needed done, and uphold the morality of the band. Throughout the marching season, I gradually learned how to do this, and I learned how to be a better leader in general. To begin, our band director frequently emphasizes that marching band is a group effort, and the whole group is only as strong as its weakest individual. I find this statement to be true for marching band as well as any activity involving multiple people.…

Theo Haimann once said, “Leadership is the process by which an executive imaginatively directs, guides and influences the work of others in attaining specified goals.” I believe that is my strongest quality. When I was little, even my parents seemed to look to me when my brother and I had a task, even though it didn’t always abide well with my brother who didn’t like being “shown up” by his younger sibling. For every situation I am put in, I don’t just accept the “follower mentality.” I want others to look up to me as somebody they desire to follow, just like a leader in my life that I strive to emulate, my mentor and band director, John Gray.…

In a band, you have many different types of instruments. You have the trumpets, clarinets, saxophones, drumline, etc. Each section has differents amounts of people in them as well. It would be hard for the director to take the time to fix each section to make them as good as they can be, so that’s why the section leaders are good to have. The section leaders help their section get their music memorized for the performances.…

But, it’s not just the previous drum majors I was influenced by; Nick, Michael, Vy, Mr. Sebastian, and my wonderful section leader Sarah also inspired me too. However, many previous drum majors had set the standards at a high level and it's my privilege and responsibility to maintain the tradition but at the same time help the band improve through words of encouragements. Even though I may not have a recognizable leadership position prior to this, one reason out of many reasons why I would be a successful leader is that I am very understanding with the people I’m working with. I know how to deal with problems that band members usually face because I was in the same position as they were, therefore, I will try my best to help them with any problems they might have as well as constantly learning from my fellow bandos to make self improvements. My goal is to motivate and inspire every member to keep pushing and practicing because if they strive for it, they will become successful.…
