My Leadership Philosophy

While current political and economic factors have placed emphasis on workforce development, I believe the purpose of education is as diverse as those who access the services of a comprehensive community college. I believe it is the responsibility of leaders to provide an educational environment where each person is understood for who they are and valued for what they bring to the educational experience. I believe that leadership is service to others. It requires listening, building relationships, integrity, ethical decision making, and community. Leadership also requires setting high expectations, sustained by accountability and conflict resolution. I believe that leadership requires the qualities of confidence, enthusiasm, vision, and courage

My leadership visions stem not only from the leadership models that were discussed in class or read in books, I plan to rely upon the leadership practices that were modeled for me in my years of being in the Catholic school system. For me, I see many parallels in being a school leader and being a leader in a classroom. Just as students need some autonomy, gentle guidance or even motivation, my classroom experience and strategies find application in my vision of a leader. Just as Dr. Murphy described a “great teacher stimulate, engage, mentor and provoke” (Murphy, 2016, Lecture Week 1, School & Learning, Slide #3). I know that I want to be a leader that challenges and motivates others, supports and values others, appreciates their time and talents.…

Leadership Philosophy In the effort to create “a new wave of experimentation and advancement” (Senge, 2013, p. 11) within the STEM curricula at OCTC in this Action Research study, my leadership philosophy is guided by Senge’s (2013) disciplines which are building a shared vision, personal mastery, team learning, mental models, and systems thinking for effective leadership within a learning organization. Building a shared vision is sharing pictures of the future with the members to decide on a common goal, and personal mastery is encouraging personal growth and development of the members of the organization (Senge). As a result of my Seven Habits Profile, I have determined three weaknesses of my leadership practices. The first weakness is ineffective communication; I do not actively listen and engage in a conversation when a team member is speaking to me. Situational leaders engage in two-way communication to listen, provide support, and encourage team members (Blanchard, 2008). During the course of the conversation, my mind is often distracted by focusing on the actions needed to resolve a situation or I am distracted by occurrences happening around me. As a result, I do not retain the information being presented, I miss important details, or I misinterpret the information.…

I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”.
