My Leadership Philosophy Essay

Leadership is considered to be the act guiding a group of individuals or organization towards a certain goal or direction in hopes for the achievement of extraordinary things. The way in which an individual leads is solely based on his or her personal values and beliefs. In an educational setting, an individual must have a vision about how teaching and learning should be provided for the group of students being served and additionally have the mindset to create a shared vision amongst stakeholders. It is my personal philosophy that school should be an organization where all individuals, leaders, teachers, and students alike, learn and grow together, creating a school culture that fosters equity and access. 102). This is my belief for teachers as well. All individuals have greatness inside of them and in a true learning organization, great leaders find ways to pull greatness out. In order to do this, there is a necessary amount of emotional intelligence required. Looking at the mirror at my own image to see what I portray to the world is what I believe keeps me grounded. I know my strengths and recognize that I have weaknesses which allows me to give grace to those whose imperfections may overshadow their talents and skills. It is my job as a curriculum leader to remain humble but at the same time, keep the expectations of teachers and students in a place where learning continues to happen. Without emotional intelligence, “…a person can have the best training in the world, an incisive, analytical mind, and an endless supply of smart ideas, but he still won’t make a great leader” (Goleman, 2001, p. 5).
