Personal Narrative: My Servant Leader

Great Essays
My leadership influences have mainly come from two people. The first is my mentor and dear friend, the late, “Dr. Myles Munroe”. This man was an ambassador and advisor to multiple kings and governments across the world including his own in the Bahamas. He conducted leadership training sessions and seminars inspiring the poorest of poor, to Kings and Prime Ministers. He has written over 50 books in over 7 different languages and still managed time to raise a beautiful and successful family of four. Among his busy schedule, he was the senior pastor for the largest church in his country and yet he always found time for the small people in this world. My second person needs no formal introduction. He is arguably the greatest leader of all time. …show more content…
His idea of leadership was to serve. He was the author of the term “Servant Leadership”. He knew who He was with convictions so deeply rooted in His mission that He literally laid down His life for others and His cause. He died at age 33 after only three short years of public service yet His influence and Spirit lives on in His followers even to this present day. Who could ever make such an impact on our world in only three short years that would attract millions of followers throughout every continent over 2000 years later? Jesus Christ is my greatest leadership influence. Between the two of them, my definition of leadership is: the result or consequence of ones’ influence while working towards achieving a mission or goal. In other words, leadership is what happens when you influence or impact others while working towards something. It is the craft of …show more content…
My leadership philosophy has developed through personal encounters with both true and counterfeit leaders. Counterfeit leadership is selfish. It is the misunderstanding of purpose and mismanagement of power. True leadership is never distracted from purpose and distributes power to others by empowering them to serve their gift selflessly. My goal is to empower people. It is based on my conviction that every person is born to lead in some area of life. The secret to success is discovering our gift and serving it to the world. We will each accomplish this by living the Coast Guard Leadership Competencies’. More specifically, I task all of my people to focus on Leading Self as the most important. This is a daily task and working progress but if we ever stop Leading Self, the other Leadership Competencies are impossible, regardless of our position or status. Leaders must memorize, meditate and work daily on each of these eight competencies. Apply them to all areas of our professional and personal life. AS we will discover, most of our problems and conflict can be resolved by Leading Self and then Leading Others. These eight competencies are: Accountability and Responsibility, Followership, Self-Awareness and learning, Aligning Values, Health and Well Being, Personal Conduct and Technical

I believe that leadership is not about one person dictating, but rather that it is a team effort. As I participate in activities where I am the leader, I make sure that I work with my peers and listen to their ideas in hopes that we can join together to devise a creative plan of action. Through my experiences as an editor on the yearbook, captain of the JV Volleyball Team and SWAT Travel Team I believe that I demonstrate the NHS ideal of leadership. Being a member of the volleyball team has taught me a lot about unity. I try to bring what I learn on the courts to everyday life.…

A man of few words. And a great listener. The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

At some point, every leader probably thinks about how they want to lead and what is important to him or her as a leader. During the CSC coursework, I wrote my command philosophy, which gave me an opportunity to reflect on past leaders I had encountered, and project how I wanted to lead in the future. The command philosophy was a statement, written to the members of the unit, about what I valued as a leader. As a foundation for how to approach this philosophy, the CSC coursework described USMC General Lejeune’s teacher/scholar leadership approach (USMC CDET, 2013a). This approach to leadership rests on a foundation of ethics, directly supporting an ethos of core values, mode of conduct, leadership principles, and leadership traits (USMC…

Leadership is providing direction to a group of people that may be seeking or lacking greater information. Through powerful leaders, the ability to transfer knowledge among similar generations takes patience and clarity. Without the existence of strong examples, confusion and misunderstanding would occur in young minds. As my peers and I are beginning to mature, we are transitioning from being influenced by a leader to becoming an important role model to others. Leadership is exemplified in my life through influencing the lives of younger generations, as well as through personal achieved acts.…

As a team, we will each work to expand on these characteristics by learning and building on our experiences. When asked: “How did you come to that philosophy, what traits and leadership characteristics do you think are important for a leader to possess and how those apply to your philosophy and the success of your organization?” My philosophy is supported with one of four classic approaches used to define the basic concept of leadership, the transactional approach. This approach tells us that the way one leads is directly attributed to the accumulation of influence to the reciprocal transactions between leaders and followers. Additionally, this philosophy is supported by Abraham Maslow’s theory that once the basic needs of survival and security are met, people concern themselves with higher needs like…

Furthermore, I am actively involved in school activities, such as choir and other activities that inspire others to make a difference.…
