My Leadership Experience At The Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Academy

The Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) is a leadership and development course designed to prepare Chief Petty Officers for increased responsibility as a member of the Chief Petty Officer Corps. During my five weeks at the CPOA I had the opportunity to network with fellow Chiefs, examine myself as a leader and grow as a person. There were several courses and experiences that I benefited from, however there were three in particular that had a tremendous impact on my overall outlook as a Chief Petty Officer. The first where the results from my leadership practices inventory, followed by an examination of my goals and values. Lastly, the overall networking and commradire I formed with my individual mess. Each of these three experiences have helped my lay the groundwork on the road I want to travel as a Chief and beyond. The leadership practices inventory was a survey sent out to my subordinates, peers and supervisors. It allowed them to anonymously critique my performance as a leader, influence as a role model and my ability to develop and enable those who work for me. The results from my subordinates did not come as a surprise to me. My five weeks at the CPOA afforded me the opportunity to network with fellow Chiefs, examine myself as a leader and grow as a person. Lessons such as the leadership practices inventory and goals and values allowed me to take a step back and examine who I am as not only a Chief but also as a friend, husband and father. Most importantly, I formed bonds with a network of Chiefs that I know will benefit me for years to come. I know the lessons taught to me here and the experience I have earned have prepared me to start the next chapter in my career in the United Stated Coast
