Reflection On My Last English Course

Improved Essays
1. Where, when, and what was your last English course? How do you feel about your writing? The last English course I took was during my years as an undergraduate; that was over fifteen-years ago. In regards to my feels about writing, I have always had a love for writing- at least until recently. In my line of work I do a lot of mundane writing. It is quite repetitive and can be brain draining. As a result, I seldom feel creative enough to want to write outside of work anymore.

2. Have you ever taken any creative writing courses in the past or done any type of creative writing on your own? In what genres (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, etc.) do you like to write? What kinds of subjects do you like to write about? Yes, I took a creative writing class in undergrad.

Even though you don’t want to think about Rhetoric, it is approaching soon and you need to be ready. I am very excited for the course and learning everything that comes along with it. I am planning on working in the healthcare field, so I am mainly looking forward to learning how to write more coherently and effectively. Once, I have a better understanding of those skills, they will benefit me in the long run. For example, I am going to be responsible to provide the correct information to the doctors I will be working with. They need to be informed on their patients and their situations and of course, these things have to be done without error.…

Coming to Carleton in September I thought I had a decent grasp on general business know how and how business worked, but after taking this course I have learned how little I knew, and how much there was for me to learn. So far in the course I would say I have learned a ridiculous amount, from business language to the skills you need to have a successful interview. In this memo, I will be covering a number of lessons I have learned, and these fall into three categories. The first being what I learned from the course, mostly what I learned in lectures and doing Learnsmart questions. These lessons have been predominantly the knowledge I have acquired through the professor and the textbook.…

I think that my biggest success in this course was remembering how to actually sit down and write papers/essays/reports. This was my first semester in college after being out of school for a decade and a half. I did not realize how much has changed, and how much I had forgotten until I had to submit my first assignment. I’m not sure if it is funny, or if it is said that when I went to school the first time, was taught to hit the space bar twice after each period, use footnotes, underline titles, and the bibliography went at the end of the paper to complement my footnotes. Through this course, I learned how to do things modernly and properly.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…
