Leprosy Mission Hospital: Personal Statement

Improved Essays
Traveling from the bustling streets of New Delhi on tuk-tuks to rural Nandnagri, Shadara I arrived at the Leprosy Mission Hospital. Nervous but optimistic, I stepped into the undersized clinic, ignoring my mother’s warnings to avoid contacts with lepers. I locked eyes with a patient sitting by himself who later became known to me as Ahkil. Over the span of hours, I listened while Akhil recounted his disheartening story of being isolated in a leper colony for five years after his family abandoned him. After telling his story, Ahkil grasped my hand tightly and said, “Dhanyavaad mujhe ek vyakti ke roop mein dekhane ke lie” translated as, “Thank you for seeing me as a person”. In that moment, I realized I made the right decision to come to India. …show more content…
At BMC I could combine both of my interests, researching ways to improve the healthcare system while still maintaining contact with patients. At BMC, I learned that research and health policy are not separate entities. As a research assistant, I like to think of myself as an unsung hero of the healthcare industry. Research is a meaningful yet overlooked component of healthcare that has allowed me to make a substantive difference in patient’s health and welfare. For example, I am currently working on a project to improve the discharge process at BMC for patients with depressive- like symptoms. Working at BMC has sparked my interest in becoming a health policy analyst to translate scientific evidence into effective policies with a broader …show more content…

Health complications in my youth and the frequent hospital trips that ensued showed me the fear and pain that patients feel. This allows me to relate and understand what others are going through. It became my childhood dream to become a physician and help patients like me to reduce the suffering and live healthier lives. My experiences serving others have also exposed me to the issues within my community and demonstrated ways I can and have made an impact, which aligns with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s commitment to serving the community. I co-founded Heal L.A. at UCLA to aid the homeless population around campus, volunteered in Asian Pacific Health Corps, and served in a research lab to reduce racial disparities in transplant. If accepted, I would bring qualities such as a commitment to service, leadership, understanding of underserved populations, and an ability to work with diverse patients to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine community. Similar to my time at UCLA, I hope to make an impact by encouraging my classmates to get involved with community service projects to extend their learning beyond the…

My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). Prior to matriculation from the program my source of motivation held no true direction, I wanted to simply “help people”. During SPHSP I was exposed to federally qualified health centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to new medium to help people. I admired the measures that FQHC put in place to effectively serve a population of people that, under normal circumstances, would not be able pursue healthcare. FQHCs aligned closely to the sense of equity that I began to develop as I was exposed to communities suffering from health disparities over the course of the internship. I deeply admire the defining characteristics of…

Solhaug’s visit to my undergraduate college, St. Olaf. However, my excitement about applying to EVMS came after researching the EVMS mission statement and vision. I realized my career goals of becoming a community-minded physician and continuing my interest in research would be fulfilled by attending EVMS. Growing up in a rural Minnesota community gave me a unique perspective on medicine. Hundreds of hard working farmers and factory workers in my community were uninsured. Therefore, medical professionals met community need by opening the C.A.R.E. Clinic for the uninsured in 2010. I have volunteered at the clinic ever since, as a greeter, grant writer, and wellness intern. I want my medical school experience to not only continue my service to my new community, but to teach me to become a community-minded physician. My experiences talking to patients at the C.A.R.E Clinic and in rural Honduras on a medical brigade have demonstrated how untreated diabetes can manifest into life-threatening conditions; therefore, seeing that EVMS is making strides in curing this disease is compelling. I would be honored to assist with this diabetic research. Finally, as a published undergraduate researcher, the innovative research opportunities at the Brock Institute are appealing. I believe the programs associated with the Brock Institute as an M1, M2, M3 or M4 will give me exceptional opportunities to not only continue to give back to my community…

An emphasis on serving underserved groups, such as minorities, and addressing current health disparities were my primary motivations for applying to Morehouse School of Medicine. Following residency, I hope to practice medicine in a community limited in terms of affordability, accessibility, and availability of healthcare options. In such a community, I can utilize my medical education for the purpose of addressing the health concerns and disparities affecting those in society who are often ignored and suffer in health as a result. Furthermore, with the abundance of opportunities for medical research, attending this medical program will foster my intellectual potential and assist me in achieving my professional goal of caring for the disadvantaged.…

I intend to be a culturally competent and socially conscious physician. I plan to use the acquired skills and knowledge to address the health care needs of minority and medically underserved communities, promote the health and well being of communities and ferociously fight to reduce and end preventable diseases facing the patient population. Therefore, I cannot imagine myself anywhere other than Meharry’s School of Medicine; it is only here where I can imagine receiving the best education and training. It is only at Meharry where I can be surrounded by physicians with similar mission statements and professional goals that are willing to nurture a generation of competent and compassionate student physicians focused on addressing health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities and patient…

Educating patients on pathways to health and collaborating with other organizations to develop wellness initiatives will ultimately reduce the cost of healthcare by decreasing the incidence of chronic disease. Primary care physicians must recognize the importance of their role in the longitudinal care of patients and capitalize on their ability to promote healthy lifestyles in their patients, I know I…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…

I have chosen to apply to the Georgetown University School of Medicine for many reasons but most importantly for its Catholic environment along with its focus on health disparities in underserved communities. My career goal is to become a primary care physician and practice medicine in a medically underserved area. My Catholic faith is central to my character and it guides my actions. The catholic principles of humility and charity to others reinforce my reasons for pursuing a career in medicine. I am particularly interested in the Population Health Scholar Tract at Georgetown because of its mission to incorporate public health to clinical practice to alleviate health disparities in the communities. The learning objectives of the program with activities to enhance self-directed learning through public health research will provide critical understanding of medical issues. This strongly mirrors my reasons for pursuing a career as a primary care physician.…

As of now, I am uncertain of what field of medicine I want to pursue. The amount of different specialties that a medical student could seek is pleasantly overwhelming. Regardless of what specialty I will end up selecting, I aspire to be more than a physician that only treats people. I am motivated to give back and contribute to my local community as well as healthcare as a whole. As I learn more about the health disparities around the UIC community, the more ideas come to mind on how to tackle these challenges. I hope to begin acting on these ideas by learning and absorbing more knowledge in order to strengthen these possible solutions. Eventually, I hope to share them and contribute through volunteering and my time in interest groups. Growing…
