My Journey To Honduras Research Paper

I never considered how difficult the life of a refugee is until recently. This past summer I traveled to Honduras on a mission trip. I went to work in an orphanage for a week. The orphanage was an outstanding facility, but the quality outside the orphanage was very low. There were probably ten people living in a hut made out of trash. One of the staff members at the orphanage said, "I don't feel sorry for the children in this orphanage. They get three meals a day and bed to sleep on. I feel sorry for the children outside the orphanage walls." That week at the orphanage taught me to really consider what is important in life. When refugees come to our country they are looking for help. We have no idea what kind of lifestyle they are running

Cape Verde is an islandic country located on the west coast of Africa. The Cape Verdean culture is a unique mixture of European and African elements, as it was colonized by Portugal until 1975. National identity is rather fragmented, mainly because of the geographical division of the islands. The northern tend to identify more with the Portuguese colonizers, whereas the southern have a closer cultural affinity with Africa. This can be seen in the different dialect of Creole spoken in the North, reflecting a larger influence from the official language of Portuguese, versus the South where its leans more toward ‘African’ sounds.…

I was meeting people who had gone through hell and back to make it here while I got here solely because of my parent’s hard work. These people helped me explore my compassionate side by telling me their stories of exactly what it took to come here. I grew incredibly thankful for the opportunity to meet and help these strangers and began making constant adjustments to my own life based on their story’s incite. For example, starting sophomore year I started missing the school bus to stay after school and then walked 2.5 miles home every day I needed to. If I had to baby sit that day, I would probably walk them to school with me and turn the trip into a Pokémon Go quest.…

September 10, the day of the hurricane, is also a national holiday for British Honduras, on which many locals gather in the streets to celebrate the defeat of Spanish conquerors by the British in 1798.[6] It is widely believed that the hurricane struck without any warning, although some recent historians have disputed this. In his column for The Belize Times on September 5, 2004, Emory King claimed that Belizean authorities withheld continuous warnings from U.S. ships in the region of a possible hurricane strike on British Honduras so the festivities would not be interrupted.[7] King cited as evidence a letter dated September 24, 1931, from a local radio operator to the Colonial Secretary in which the warnings were discussed, adding that "perhaps none of [the authorities] had ever been in a hurricane and didn't know exactly how bad it was going to be."[8 ] Additionally, there was also belief among residents of Belize City that the reefs would provide a barrier against large tidal waves.[9] Storm surge, abnormally high tides, and strong winds resulted in severe damage and many deaths in Belize City.…

In Hannah Arendt article “We Refugee” states that the hardship of being a refugee is in losing one’s past. I think it was clearly presented in this movie how the town was not able to accept her just as a human being but when she agreed to do what they wanted her to do, they accepted her and gave her 2 weeks to see if she does what they told to her to do then they will accept her. They didn’t feel it was their duty to help her just because she was not from their village and I think they would protect her from that gangster if she was from their village, for them she was a stranger who they didn’t want to help her unless she would give them in return. I think same is happing with refugees they are not being helped or accepted into the United States just because they are not from America.…

Adding on to the foreign feeling of the food they will likely experience confusion while navigating as it may seem much different than what they are used…
