Statement Of Purpose: Becoming An Adult

Improved Essays
These last few months, I’ve been thinking a lot about growing up. As a junior in high school, I’m just starting to consider what colleges I want to apply to and careers I want to explore. Thinking ahead five years is not very uncommon during this point in my life, and I’ve had plenty of time to think about the changes that becoming an adult will bring about. Hopefully, most of these changes will be for the better as I move forward to achieve my goals.

Living on my own.
When I turn eighteen, I plan on moving out of my parents’ house in Toledo to California. This transition will obviously bring about a whole slew of changes by itself, since I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life. Since it’s so far away from Ohio, I won’t be around my family much and I won’t be able to see them very often. After living with my parents all my life, in five years, I hope I’ll be used to living without them. I also won’t be able to enjoy the places and things I love so much about my hometown of Toledo, but I’m sure I’ll be able to find many other things about California that I’ll grow to love as

A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

Alana Picard Mr. Santaella Enc 1101 31 August 2017 Society Changes Robin Henig who wrote “What is it About 20-Somethings?” argues that the twenties are a developmental stage for humans that comes before adulthood. She states that to be an adult, a person must have a degree, be married with children, be financially independent, and have moved out. While in 1960 that may have been the case, in 2017 it is not. The economy is nothing like it was in the 60’s, lifestyles have also changed significantly since then and for a person to move out of their parents house these days is nearly impossible until they have a stable and well paying job. Robin says that “reaching adulthood is happening later than ever” (Henig) which I, personally disagree with.…
