My Journey The journey which has been my life has taken many different turns. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined myself in college ready to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. As I look back on how my attending college started, I realize this was the path I was meant to take. I was not ready for college at a younger age as I lacked confidence in myself to believe I could succeed. Now I know the time is right to reach for my dream.
Past
My earliest exposure to the world of psychology came during the summer I was twelve. My father had been ill and off work for several weeks. This was difficult for a man in a working class family with five children to feed. Over that summer Dad became quieter and seemed sad all the time. He constantly …show more content…
Unfortunately, people see the diagnostic rise in autism as a way to make money. Parents in the autism are desperate to help their children and are willing to try whatever anything to help their child. At times parents are left with bad experiences and tell other people what they went through. Negative experiences with behaviorism and ABA are difficult to combat. At times the experience is so horrible the parents are unwilling to ever attempt it again. Parents are vocal in their frustration regarding improper services and influence other parents against using the principles of behaviorism. There is also the misconception of turning children into robots. Someone properly trained in behaviorism and ABA will ensure the child is able to exhibit their learned skills across varying environments with multiple therapists in order to generalize the skill and add it to the child’s everyday repertoire. The entire concept of behaviorism and ABA is that of creating a nurturing environment for a child to grow and …show more content…
This method ensures those who are in charge of the research have no knowledge of the subjects in the control or experimental group. This protects the findings of the experiment as well as the reputations of the scientists involved in the study. However, I find I have no interest in research after attending my helping skills class for there I found I enjoy listening to and helping others. I use a great deal of what I have learned during that class in my everyday life. I understand better how to relate and interact with people simply by being more observant of their behaviors and listening to not only what someone says but how they say it. While I have not practiced psychology at this point, I have offered my opinion to people when asked. Additionally, I have been able to listen to someone discussing an issue they are having and have been able to help them understand how to figure out their correct course of action. Before helping skills I would offer advice about what I would do in their situation, but now I know that was wrong. I am not living their life and I have no right to tell them how they should live. On the other hand, if I can help them figure out what works for them using their own skillset, then I have truly succeeded and that is my current strength. I am now able to listen to someone and not fear the silence for I now know sometimes you learn more by allowing a person to talk. This was
