Starting my Journey Ever since I was 12, I knew I wanted to work with children. I thought about being a pediatrician or social worker. Upon self-reflection, I knew neither route would be right for me. After years of bible school, cheer camps, basketball camps, and summer schools; I realized teaching was the field for me. In the seventh grade I started to help teach children’s church. I loved everything about it. I loved teaching the children new songs, stories, and games. The children seem to look at me like I was something special, too. To them, I was no longer just another kid—but a role model . Hearing a child say, “I want to be like you when I grow up” or “You give me hope to follow my dreams” was a wonderful blessing. I knew I wanted to continue giving children the hope and perseverance to follow their dreams. For several summers, I worked in children’s summer camps/schools and vacation bible schools. Once again, I was teaching classes and concepts. I taught kindergarten girls who were full of energy. Part of my job was tunneling that energy into learning, but in an entertaining way. I had to persuade the children that learning could be fun! Luckily, years of working with children helped me develop games that would engage my children to learn. I channeled my girls’ competitiveness into basketball math games, baseball reading games or whatever else I could come up with.
