Reflective Essay: My Journey Of Literacy

Let me begin by saying that my journey literacy may be far different from others due to the circumstances of my position in life. In reflecting on the greatest influences in my education, I realize they come from no-traditional sources. I have been in the workforce far longer than I have been in school. Due to this time span, I feel that my greatest influences have probably come from my bosses and peers. I spend the greatest amount of time with them on a day to day basis. Although, my conversations maybe far less enjoyable than talking to my friends or family, the engagement usually involves a request for me to read something or provide some input to a specific topic. Each of these discussion on some level involves some form of learning. It is strange to me that a five-minute conversation with a peer, who has just given me a directive, has now become a research project, to which I am expect to gain an understanding and then relate at later time, much in the same context as I am doing now. Being that I felt a certain sense of impatience I did not heed her but went ahead to take two at the same time. They were complimentary of one another, according to the course outline. Forge ahead, I told myself you can do it, and I did. But I do have to tell you when a counselor suggests that only take one class at a time, they are looking at your best interest. When I opened the course syllabus for one class I panicked. “They want HOW MANY ESSAYS? I haven’t written an essay in over 25 years”, were my thoughts. I may have even said it out loud. Seventeen to be exact and that was just the one class. Please don’t misunderstand this was just my initial feelings, they later subsided. I tend to get a little anxious at the begin of a new class.
