For my job shadow, I visited a college campus to observe a professor. I went to Mankato State University and watched a class in one of the buildings. We then took a tour of the campus while Professor Strunk described her daily jobs and what the students do while on campus. What I observed was a class and some of Professor Strunk’s daily activities. As it was the first day of summer classes, we observed Professor Strunk go over the syllabus for the class and hear her expectations. After the class, we saw Professor Strunk converse with student with questions and make sure to accommodate them, as well as answer a few emails. We then took a tour of the campus while Professor Strunk described some of her and her colleagues daily tasks and activities. …show more content…
Then, most people work in their profession for awhile before they pursue a Master’s degree and look to become a college professor. Right now, I would like to major in psychology or English at a four year school and then go into a profession while I pursue a Doctoral degree. I would definitely consider a job in college teaching. I love teaching others and helping others, and I would love the opportunity to have some summer time off to travel. If I were to become a college professor, I think it would be about maybe ten years after I finish at a four year school. The negatives of teaching though, are long hours and how much schooling you need. The job shadowing experience did not really influence what I want to do in the future because I had quite a bit of previous knowledge. It did remind me how patient I would have to be to pursue this profession. I would have to work in a profession while I pursue my Doctoral degree before I could become a professor. Going into my job shadow, I did not know that most professors taught summer courses. I did not know that most people did not become college professors directly after schooling. I did not know that most people started working before they began pursuing a doctoral

These roles can be anything from the librarian, professor, and even to the university president; Hacker and Dreifus express that these roles could be executed better to help the development of a college student's experience. Some ways that these roles can be executed is by engaging with students. Coming from high school, or being a transfer student can be a huge change and all a college student wants is to be welcomed and loved, one way this could happen is by faculty engaging with the students. Engaging with a student can go from giving a friendly smile in passing to making the time to meet with a student struggling in class. One thing that colleges don’t demand anymore is good teachers.…

Society has made the assumption that receiving a college education will turn you into a doctor, lawyer or member of any other high paying occupation. However, today the amounts of college graduates succeeding in obtaining a job in these professions are very slim. A college degree is a luxury that a few fortune people can obtain, and even fewer can capitalize on a soft job market. This is the generalization that has confronted many considering a college degree program and older adults weighing the reasonableness of returning to college. Columnist David Leonharht, wrote the article, "It college Worth It?", published in 2014 in the The New York Times, and addresses this assumption of college relevance in which he argues that while a college degree does not offer a guarantee of social success, it is the best decision one can make to maximize ones financial potential and achieve middle class status and beyond. Leonhardt begins his credibility with his own professional background, and further progresses…

Most people change their career decisions multiple times before they actually pick a final job, but I never had an interest in anything other than being a teacher. I have always connected with younger kids over high school or middle school children, which is why I chose to major in Early Childhood Education.
