My Involvement In Skillsusa

Leadership is a passion of mine, as reflected by my involvement in SkillsUSA, and I strive to be a leader in everything I do: from working fervently and assisting others in classes to volunteering and leading club meetings. My priority in college is to earn a degree in chemical engineering, but I will always make time to lead and volunteer.

I intend to join the Society of Women Engineers while in college. This club interests me the most because I know how arduous it can be to be a female in the engineering community. At my school, I have always been one of the few females in the drafting and technical drafting courses. There were others in my class who said I could not be an engineer because I was a girl: I retreated and became very quiet, fearing more harsh comments. I found the support I needed in SkillsUSA. My advisors assured me that my gender did not make me any less of an engineer. Overcoming these challenges bettered me as a leader and a student. Eventually I would love to become a leader in the Society of Women Engineers as it would provide me with the opportunity to share my own experiences and help other women overcome adversity.

Leading an organization of 170 members was a difficult task in itself, but being handed the trust of the incoming freshmen, and having control over their first high school experience was intimidating. Never having led such a large group, it required a new dimension of leadership to make sure that the entire organization was always on board with the program’s aspirations of welcoming the freshmen to Stuyvesant’s vibrant community and guiding them throughout the year. I found myself having to be more assertive and organized. And although it was a sudden change from the more intimate style of leadership I was used to, it was thrilling to have such a great impact on my school’s community. I expanded the program to work more closely with the Student Union, introduced a one-on-one meeting system between the Big Sibs and the freshmen, and developed the Big Sib…

Partaking in the student council organization has allowed for personal and leadership growth, and is comprised of plentiful downfalls and successes. But I believe that it requires missteps and prosperity to learn and grow as a leader. In terms of strength, my skills in proper and adequate delegation tasks have contributed to the successes of my class. However, delegating and simply telling others what to do is not leadership, it is the act of collaborating with one another to execute an event or achieve the goal. Ultimately, I believe that it is my ability to uplift and empower others as my greatest asset.…

The Top 200 Program was created for strongly driven students who seek career readiness skills to thrive independently, but grow as a unit. And this is truly a reflection of my character as I am constantly seeking new ways to get involved both academically and within my community to understand others, myself, and the world better. As a student, my personal goals have always consisted of having a career as a Computer Software Engineer majoring in Computer Science. Unfortunately, females are a minority in this field. There's an ongoing list of situations that any woman may encounter while pursuing this major, including working harder to prove a point that ladies can excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses and being negatively affected by sexism against female engineers simply because we are from the relatively small percentage. Regardless of the circumstances, I will continue as a strong, efficient worker while being underestimated. Auspiciously, I have the courage to take on the task head first.…

A good leader will be able to create visions that are measurable and attainable. In order to do this one must understand the institutional climate. They must understand the population of students served and the strengths of those who serve the students. As stated by Sergiovanni, (1992), “Leadership mindscapes are shaped by what we believe and value and by our understanding of the world” (p.41). However, the number of men entering engineering has followed the same trend. This gender gap may have been caused by the different influences that are in a female’s life, different educational experiences that males and females experienced, and when females have little to no professional confidence in their abilities, hindering them from going into engineering.…
