My Invisible Cultural Identity

Invisible Culture Most struggles of cultural identity come from someone not being able to define their culture or not being accepted because of their multiculturalism, but my struggle with cultural identity is different—I don’t know how to define mine. I am caucasian, and I can trace my roots to ancestors that are German, French, Dutch, Irish, and pretty much anywhere in Europe, but I don’t know specific amounts. My parents were both born in the U.S. and my mom has lived here her whole life, while my dad was an “army brat” and has lived all over the world. My family has no cultural traditions that we celebrate and while food is very important to me, we don’t cook recipes from our culture. I celebrate my culture by celebrating the things that are important to me, food, dance, friends, and family.
Food is a constant all around the world; we eat it every day, there’s restaurants and grocery stores on every corner, and food is advertised everywhere. Different places have a variety of foods that are important or widely eaten. My family has no food that we learned to make …show more content…
I’ve been dancing almost nine years, four years when I was younger living in Florida and almost five years here. I’m at the dance studio anywhere from 10 to 14 hours a week, both taking and teaching classes. Even on days when I’m not at the studio I’m stretching or working out because I know I can’t improve unless I work for it. Dance is an art form to me, a way to express myself and express the ideas of others. When I learn new steps or new styles, I’m getting a piece of someone else’s culture and learning how they thought, who they were, and I’m expanding my knowledge of dance culture. Through dance I have learned how to be a better role model for the dancers I teach, how to take care of myself, and how to manage my time between dance and schoolwork. The friends I’ve made while in dance mean the world to me, and I trust them all
