Personal Narrative: My First Interview

Improved Essays
My first interview was performed on my grandmother. I chose her because I knew she could give me insight that a modern couple could not, since she and her husband met approximately 70 years ago. I also knew that she would be very open to discussing her relationship with me, so I knew it would not be awkward. Her husband unfortunately had passed away about twenty years ago, so he could not be there to give his side. In the interview, we discussed where and how they met, how old they are, if religion affected the relationship, the little things that kept the marriage happy and good, as well as her attraction to him. My second couple chosen was my close friend. I chose her for similar reasons that I chose my grandmother, such as knowing that it …show more content…
In both cases, their attraction was instant and their satisfaction in the relationship has increased over time. A large difference between the two couples is that in my grandmother’s case, she believed that if her relationship had been set in modern times, they would have been just as happy, whereas in the case of my second interview, she believed the opposite. The gain of technology would have made no negative impact on their love, whereas in appendix B’s case, the lack of technology could have caused a fatal breakup. Another large difference is their cohabitation. Appendix A’s couple did not cohabitate before marriage, so everything they ended up learning about living with another person, they learned together, whereas in appendix B’s case, they are already “testing the waters” (Lewandowski, 2011, p. 81) for marriage. They have differences in the places they are at in the relationship. Appendix A was married for almost 50 years, while appendix B has only been dating a year and a half. The couple in appendix B has not experienced near as many life changes, struggles, or as much time together as couple B has. As expected, couple B has many more insecurities about the relationship than that of A, but only because of the length of the …show more content…
It was interesting to ask them almost exactly the same questions and compare just how different they responded. This comparison proved that the values and morals of relationships are shifting and changing all the time, and not always negatively. Couple A had a lifelong experience of finding love, creating a relationship, entering a union, creating a family, and enjoying their relationship until the very end. Couple B is only in the beginning of those steps. Comparing the two and viewing their responses shows just how different people will respond at different stages of their relationship. I am sure if I had interviewed my grandmother when she and her late husband had just met, their responses might have more closely resembled those of couple B. This information puts relationships into different lights. The success in couple A and the potential success in couple B is a good way to view things. Although I myself have only been dating my boyfriend for just less than two years, there is always the potential that we could turn out like my grandmother did. While sometimes it is not always fair to compare one relationship to another, sometimes it can be helpful to give oneself a larger

His audience could consist of a wide range of western people: men, women, singles, or married couples. He changes gears and begins to talk about the modern reasons for marriage. “We have to be wholly at peace with the prospect of many years of solitude in order to be appropriately picky; otherwise, we risk loving no longer being single rather more than we love the partner that spared us that fate” (pg. 2). The author is trying to tell his audience that we fall in love with the idea of marriage or simply with the fact that we are not alone. “Perhaps we were in…

English Essay Rough Draft-The Best of Two Worsts It is believed by many that mutual love is one of the most cherished sensations known to us. But how do you know when you have truly found it? That seems to be a concern seldom addressed between neither Liam and Gabriella (from the short story, “Bluffing” by Gail Helgason) nor Ann and John (from the short story, “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross) throughout the course of their relationships.…

Most people think about how love used to be before the 21st century. In the book Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari and Eric Klinenberg, a comedian and a sociologist, both compared the modern and the old way of romance. Ansari and Klinenberg explained how the couples back in the 50’s through 90’s would meet and marry right away. People would marry within their neighborhood for example, in the same building of apartment, just couple blocks down from their house or parents would arrange their marriage. The relationship back then were three steps just somewhat similar today, meet each other, meet each other’s family and meet furthermore of each other throughout the marriage.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…
