Personal Narrative: My Interview With Dr. Wheaton

To complete this paper, I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Wheaton. She is a pediatric physician at Kaiser Permanente in Hayward. I have always wanted to be a physician and since I love working with kids, I thought interviewing a pediatric physician would be very beneficial because it would give me a lot of insight on a career that I might pursue in the future. Since I volunteer at a hospital, I asked my supervisor if she knows a doctor who would give me few hours of his/her time. She gave me five names and I did a little research on each one of them and I found Dr. Wheaton to be the best fit. Luckily, I found her email address (it is almost impossible to find a doctor’s personal email) and I asked if she would interview with me. I must admit, personally contacting a busy physician is really hard. She agreed and …show more content…
It saved me days of research by myself. Coming from a doctorless family, I did not know what a doctor has to go through in order to be able to practice medicine. It is really hard and you have to be very dedicated to survive but I still do believe that it is worth it. I knew doctors have to work a lot of hours but working an average of 110 hours a week even before being a licensed physician is just fascinating and completely terrifying! Although, Dr. Wheaton was very encouraging and she assured me that if nothing will go to waste if I work hard enough. I am a little bit more scared now to go to medical school and become a doctor but at the same time I am really excited and happy. Dr. Wheaton is a highly educated and sophisticated person. I was very much honored to speak to her for a non-medical reason. The interview actually went for almost three hours but it was very eye-opening and interesting. I have never been this sure that this is what I want to do with my life. Not necessarily a pediatric physician, but a physician; someone who is able to help others at all

I never was the most confident person when it came to competing. I always felt discouraged because I “knew” there would be people better than me. Towards the end of my junior year in high school a special program was announced to the students. “Doc Prep” was a weeklong trip to Baylor College of Medicine that gave ten students the opportunity to witness heart surgeries, practice suturing, handle human brains, and meet many interesting people. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this enriching experience?…

I have seen more doctors than I can count on my fingers due to my asthma acting up every now and then and at times with bad allergic reactions. However there was one doctor that has always been there for my parents and I. He of course may not be world famous yet, but to me he is the best I have ever met. I’ve known him since I was in elementary school and I still continue to see him from time to time but since he is a doctor it isn’t as often.…

“Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity,” said Hippocrates. I have always wanted to work in the medical field, specifically as a Physician’s Assistant because I’ve wanted to help people ever since I was a small child. My mother is a nurse and my father is in the military and a volunteer firefighter, so I’ve been surrounded by people that help others for a living. I always loved knowing that my parents impacted others every single day that they went to work. I want to be able to look myself in the mirror when the day is done and truthfully say that I impacted someone’s life as greatly as my parents always have.…

My desire for becoming a healthcare provider began as a little girl. At a young age, I carried a stethoscope around, patched my dolls with colorful Band-Aids and gave them their shots. I wanted to heal and care for them. As time went by, what seemed like a simple childhood aspiration, evolved into a need and a true desire to care for others. Despite some difficulties in my early college years, I still have the same passion to fulfill my dreams.…

So to see the kids and how they interact with one another as well as how "normal" they were with their learning abilities. No children received medication during my clinical visit, although a few was said to receive medication by their parents in the morning or before bedtime.…

Ever since I was a little girl, I found myself fascinated with the intricacies of the human body. I would spend hours playing doctor or nurse with my sister, and even when she did not want to play with me I would improvise with my dolls. I would watch medical TV shows such as “Greys Anatomy” and I would continue to fall in love with the thought of medicine and helping people with their treatment and potentially saving their lives. Working as a medical scribe in an OBGYN office this past summer has only furthered my interest into becoming a physician’s assistant.…

However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured.
