Classroom Interview Paper

I conducted my interview with a student at Longwood named Michael. He is currently a junior and has been here since he was a freshman. This interview was particularly easy, mostly because I expected his answers to be different as a man of color. While I realize that diversity is not prevalent in most areas the way it is in others, I feel that Michael and I had an extremely similar experience while growing up. I found that this interview surprised me because as a Caucasian woman, I did not expect a man, regardless of ethnicity to go through the same experiences. I believe that learning about one’s self is one of the most interesting and important things that we as humans can do. However, this is not implemented in our classroom curriculum. …show more content…
Examples of demographics include; your location, education level, gender, and age. Michael grew up in a populous city in the tidewater region of Virginia. His classes were predominantly African American’s and Caucasians. Interestingly enough, there was a similar mix of individuals that lived in the suburbs compared to individuals living in low-income housing. The ratio of men to women in his classes was very similar. I believe that the ratio of men to women in classes is not a definitive ranking of demographics because the class next to yours could have the complete opposite ratio number wise. In a smaller school with classes of twenty or less, I can imagine how this could factor in, though. He noted that his experience with the ratio of men to women in his lower education is extremely different to his experience with the ratio of men to women in college. On the other hand, coming to a college that was originally all women and now remains predominantly women, has a different ratio of men to women than other colleges. Demographics play a key role in classrooms. The only things you do not choose in school is who teachers you and who you will be teaching. Until you enter a classroom for the first time, you will not know how many girls, how many boys, how many are white, how many are not. I find this to be the best part of teaching because it is the one thing you will never have control

Within the Canadian criminal justice system offenders are often placed back into the community under the supervision of probation officers, as an alternative to incarceration (Griffiths & Murdock, 2014, p. 68). Imposed as a sentence by the Criminal Court judge, in a number of different ways and under different circumstances, probation is the most commonly used strategy for this type of supervision (Griffiths & Murdock, 2014, p. 92). When sentenced to probation, a criminal offender is placed under supervision in the community for a set amount of time up to three years, and is required to follow any general and specific conditions outlined by the court (Griffiths & Murdock, 2014, p. 69). Key to the success of correctional interventions include…

I’ve usually learned in hard way because frankly, I love to challenge myself to expand my personal capacity. Although I had already talked to one of my classmates about having interview with her as a Caucasian woman, I decided to do it with my cousin’s friend, Jacob, who I met in my place for the first time during Thanksgiving holidays. Interviewing Jacob about his interactions with other cultures has made me realize that I have a lot to learn about the meaning of the privilege and holding it. Jacob was a 24-year-old Caucasian, who lived in Missouri his entire life. Though he was visiting California for the second time in his life, he was in a Persian house for the first time.…

Introduction I originally was going to interview a girl from Singapore for this paper, but I had to go back home and I was not able to talk with her after all. So while I was back in my home town I interviewed a girl I went to school with, and for the sake of the paper I am going to refer to her as Sally. Before interviewing Sally I knew how our physical appearances differed, but I didn’t realize how culturally different we were. Understanding Others Sally is different from me in number of ways, but some of our differences are she is a mother, she refers to herself as a Christian, she still lives in the town she grew up in, and she has a job.…

Demographics are used to find out information about someone’s characteristics. They can include gender, age, race, sexual orientation, educational level, and ideological or religious views. Most of this information can be found through formal surveys, with open-ended and closed-ended questions. Open-ended questions are questions that do have limitations, while closed-ended questions have multiple choices. These things can help a speaker connect with the audience by relating to them.…

The connection made between the thesis and evidence used in the writing this book is strong and concluded that the fall of the working-class family is not only tied to a decrease in job availability, but also relies on the increase of cohabitation, sex outside of marriage, soaring divorce rates, as well as children being born to single parents (Cherlin 2014: 121). Cherlin mentions the fact that the American economy will be able to absorb the increase of bachelor earning degree people into the labor force, but one is left with wondering if the answer to the question is this true…how big of a degree earning flood will the labor force be able to take in and how many people will find it hard to acquire a job resulting from the fact that there are too many degree earners all entering in the labor force at the same time, which might have be answered if supporting data would have been included in the book (Cherlin 2014: 187). Cherlin gathered a lot of data which showed a neutral bias toward white and blacks both, but why did this data not include those from other ethnic backgrounds or would including such data or information skew the outcome of the thesis. Was leaving other ethnicities out of the subject matter done on purpose, was it because the author…

Excluding you from joining the band I just formed, refusing to work with you on a school project, and verbally neglecting you on something that you could not control. These are just some examples on how it feels like to be a part of a minority race or to have a different skin color. You will start to feel like a second class citizen and that no matter how well you do, it wouldn’t matter because you’re never going to be acknowledged and treated as the same like everyone else. Today, we have acknowledged that these reactions and feelings do exist and we consider it to be a component of racism.
