I had the opportunity to interview my brother-in-law James Grech, also known as “Pookie”. While asking him certain questions, some of his responses were quite interesting. Even though I’ve known him over half my life, I still learned new things about his life and his personal interests. After interviewing him, I felt I was able to understand him a little more.
James was born the year of 1974 in Chicago IL, also known as the “Windy City.” At around 13 years old, which was about 35 years ago, he moved with his family here to Detroit, MI. He became a musician because he felt he had a spiritual connection with music and it’s very enjoyable. The amount of passion he has for music and playing the bass guitar, is something he just can’t express with words.
His first musical experience was in 1980 at Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI. Both his brothers and both parents were with him as they went and seen Elton John. Growing up, James would always listen to his father sing opera and he was very intrigued by it. Growing up he also listened to Classic Rock and Punk Rock. …show more content…
He has since than been playing the instrument for 25 plus years. James told me the person who influenced him to play the bass guitar was “Les Clay Pool,” from the band called “Primus”. His first performance was when he was 19 years old. He played with his very first band named (IN) which was a punk rock band. They performed at a bar named the “Token Lounge,” which is located in Westland, MI.
During his time as a musician he’s played many shows. His favorite gigs to play are outdoor festivals. The band he plays bass guitar for now, called the “BEGGARS,” plays Rock & Roll. For the last few years they have played at outdoor festivals such as the PIG n WHISKEY, DIY Festival, Hamtramck Music Festival, and Metro Times Blowout. They are also looking forward to playing outside Corktown Tavern again for the St. Patty’s Day
