My internship is at UC Davis Medical Center in the Clinical Social Services Department. This semester, the interns are doing rounds in the hospital. What that means is that each week, I am in a different unit of the hospital shadowing a Social Worker and taking cases if I feel comfortable. With that being said, I have not had the opportunity to have a client for a long period of time. Next semester, I will have to chose one or two units that I want to work in and that is where I will have my own caseload for the rest of the year. Luckily, I have been in some units for more than one week because of the lack of referrals in another unit, therefore, I have had an opportunity in motivational interviewing while working with a client. I had gotten a referral in OB to do an assessment on a woman that had just delivered a baby. The referral was because the woman had a history of depression and anxiety and the medical team was nervous on whether she was going to be okay before discharge. I went ahead ready with the questions that I needed to make in order to give the medical team a disposition. As I walked in the room, I noticed that she was laying in bed with her baby next to her bed. The woman was a 29 year old African American woman. I asked the client if this was a good time to talk and right away, she was guarded and questioned what this was for. I was aware that when many people hear that a social worker is going to talk to them, it is sometimes not for a good reason. I had…
