Personal Narrative: Student Internship

In January, when I first started my internship at the Mansfield Youth Services Bureau, I was unsure of whether or not it was the type of placement I was in search of. When I first reached out to the Director of Youth Services, Pat Michalak, it was with the intention that I would be placed in a position where I could gain hands-on experience working with youth, ages 18 and under, but that was not what was available to me at the time. The bureau’s two initiatives that allow for direct involvement with youth, Big Friends and COPE, had already been filled at the beginning of the school year. However, Pat was so intrigued by my e-mail of inquiry that she did not wish to lose me as an intern.

As of right now, we have two amazing high school seniors interviewing residents in their homes. It has been left up to the interviewee what they wish to discuss and, out of the five interviews that have been completed thus far, there has been no two stories that have been alike. One woman discussed the adoption of her daughter who was a different race then she while another discussed her time travelling the nation, including the time she spent living in Alaska with her family. While I am usually unable to be present at the interviews due to conflicting work and class schedules, I have had the opportunity to listen to the voice-recorded interviews as I am transcribing them. While I am facilitating most of the project from behind the scenes, Pat and I have discussed the opportunity for me to perform an interview on my own so that I can gain the same communication experiences that these two students are. Looking back, I am thankful that I did not settle for Pat’s original offer to assist with the newsletter and the newspaper because, if I had done so, I would not have had the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing initiative that I helped to conceptualize and

This internship was very challenging and demanding for me, because I had no idea what to expect. I interned in a Harm Reduction program that assisted homeless veterans with transitioning from temporary housing to permanent housing.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…
