My Experience: My Internship In The Intervention Classroom

Improved Essays
My internship is at Sixth Ward Middle School in the Intervention classroom with Mrs. Andrea Landry. This class is designed to help students who are struggling in their core classes. During Intervention we compete incomplete assignments with students, provide extra assistance in all core classes, and build reading and math skills to prepare students for LEAP testing, but we also teach a lesson. However, I learned quickly that our mornings in the classroom never go as planned. There are days that we cannot teach our usual twenty minute lesson because children either need extra time to complete a test from another class or they simply need extra help in another core class so, we make adjustments to our schedule based on each particular class. …show more content…
I found myself to be excited to be working with children, but also nervous that I was in a new environment. I haven’t worked in three years, so being around new people in a working environment was going to be different than what I was used to everyday. Mrs. Andrea explained that my expectations in the classroom are teaching and helping the students with anything they need help with. She allows me to have the same amount of control over the class just like she does. She explained to the students that I’m a teacher in training and that they should seek my help just as they would seek hers. I’m thankful that she is allowing me to get the most out of my experience. On the other hand, in the beginning my main concern was that the students would have questions that I would not know the answer to. I graduated six years ago and a lot has changed within the school system since then. Unfortunately, this has happened during common core math, but thankfully my supervisor is very understanding and she explained the problem so that I would be able to assist students from our other periods, so there was no need for me to feel embarrassed. Also, my feelings of anxiety were quickly relieved when I realized how welcoming the teachers and staff are. They were interested in getting to know all about me and about my future plans upon graduating and that made me feel more at ease. My supervisor has been absent for three days and the …show more content…
I’m trying my hardest to motivate my students to be the best that I know they can be. In order to motivate my students, Mrs. Andrea and I designed a chart with fifteen squares and each time students score a 75% or higher on “TeenBiz” articles they place a sticker on their chart. Once the chart is filled students get to choose a prize. I also bought candy for students who come to class with their learning logs complete, and who are prepared and willing to learn. At the moment, the chart seems to be working perfectly as one student has already filled his chart and most are on their way. However, I’m still working on motivating my eighth graders, but I’m confident that with a little more encouragement and motivation these students will be as confident in themselves as I am in

Educational Autobiography Have you ever wondered where you would be today if you did not have the education you’ve had along the way? Throughout my years my motivation has stemmed from not only my parents, family and my teachers but it has come from within myself too. I strongly believe that praise and reward can help a student who is struggling or help them with their weaknesses. Carol Dweck in “Brainology” states that a growth mindset person has better odds of becoming who they want to be in life and that their intelligence will take them far (Dweck 1).…

While observing in Beth Johnston’s First Grade classroom at Eugene Field Elementary School, I have noticed some effective and ineffective classroom management practices that she uses while I have been in the classroom. One effective classroom management technique that I have observed is that Mrs. Johnston puts her student’s desks into groups of three or four. This is an effective technique because she puts her strong students with her not as strong students, which can help with the students who might need a little help staying on track with the lesson that they are supposed to get done. Also, Mrs. Johnston has changed the groups a couple of times since I have been observing in the classroom. This I believe is effective because the students…

Recently, I had a learning experience from my internship that will help me even more in my pursuit in the field of social work. The day that this event occurred it helped me be able to be the teacher rather than the student to my intern advisors. Being that Voyage house is a support program for clients, we help to provide them with the necessities of food and household items from those that have no income. Therefore, we take them to Walmart and give them a budget that they are able to work with since they only need to provide resources just for them to living off. This was on a Friday where I had to miss group because I had something to do at school that morning; therefore, I just met my intern advisor later that day at Walmart.…
