My Interest In Research

Concerning my interest in child heath and wellness, I think there is both an objective and a more emotionally-imbued reason. Detaching myself from the emotional aspects of working with and for the sake of children, I am interested in child health because children are constantly growing and developing. In respects to neuroscience, I am able to see and research neurological diseases and cognitive functions as it applies to a brain that is constantly changing. The adult brain does have some plasticity, but it is incomparable to that of a child’s. I am fascinated by the aspect of change and development and how that influences the variables being researched. However, as I become more exposed to other opportunities in college, my certainty has dwindled. It could be that my certainty in wanting to only practice medicine was due to lack of exposure to other options. In participating in CRISSP, I want to gain more exposure to research, so I can better evaluate it as a career option. What began to interest me was abstract idea of research, and I would like more opportunities to solidify the interest in an idea to interest due to an actual experience. Additionally, I hope to be able to observe physician scientists. I am still very much interested in medicine, and it made be that the intersection between medicine and research, specifically in neuroscience, will be what I chose to pursue. Moreover, through clinical shadowing opportunities, I hope to gain a glimpse of the professional environment of a physician. The topic of Dr. Marsh’s research drew my interest, because the aspect of child health and wellness I find most fascinating is the aspect of development. I would love the opportunity to help conduct research on the influence development has on seizure disorders. I am particularly interested in participating in projects that study the effects of manipulations on mouse behavior. However, I had learned about immunohistochemistry and electrophysiological techniques in my neuroscience classes, and I am also interested in the opportunity to see these techniques in actual practice and gain experience utilizing them.
