My initial thoughts on Shelley is she is distracting her classmates and teacher to distract others from noticing the difficulties she has with math. One reasons she might not be doing well is because of her lack of resources in order to be successful in math, such as tutoring, or parents who encourage her to do well in school. Another possibility is that she has a math learning disability that is undiagnosed. Students who have undiagnosed learning disabilities tend to do poorly because they are not given the accommodations they need to be successful. Shelley’s might have little motivation to do well, but her failure in the past might have diminished it. She also might not know how to ask for help from her teacher or parents. It’s possible that

All student have the ability to reach their full potential, but only if they are given the right tools and reinforcements. If Shelley gets separate tutoring, and is given reinforcements for passing a math assignments, she could increase her chance of becoming a successful student. If I rated Shelley control of her failure in mathematics I would give her a score of 2 out of 10. There are so many different factors and possibilities that could contribute to Shelley’s poor achievement in mathematics that it would be too extreme to say that it is entirely her fault, or not her fault at all. I gave her a 2 out of 10 because the factors that are causing her to act out are not her own. For instance, her environment at home could be a factor contributing to her failure in completing her homework. Her parents could work long hours and not have time to help her look over her homework, or she might have the responsibility of looking after younger siblings when she gets home. However, while most of the factors are not Shelley’s fault, her reaction to the situations it related to her individual personality. Children reacted differently to every situation, and Shelley’s need to cause drama and draw attention to herself is how she deals with the circumstances. Another student with a quieter personality might not voice their opinions so loudly and suffer in a more silent
