Personal Narrative Essay About Speeches

Great Essays
I joined speech and debate for two reasons. Reason one: my two best friends were in the class and absolutely loved it. Reason two: I wanted to conquer my anxiety about speeches. Speeches have always been a problem for me, and ever since I was little I’ve had to give them. My first speech occurred in fifth grade when I won the student of the year award that is given to the brightest and most promising fifth grader at the school. During the next few years, middle school had a small amount throughout, which I felt sick before every single speech assigned. Sophomore year had a speech every other week, and when I got up there to speak, I wasn 't sure if the next thing out of my mouth was going to be the words or throw-up. Nevertheless I believed …show more content…
The award ceremony was next, and since there were only four people in novice prose, there was a 75% chance I would place. I became excited because it was my first tournament and I felt I had done well with my prose, thanks to my sleep-deprived-zombie-like self. But I could feel the anxiety bubbling in my tummy, tossing and turning like a toddler in bed. The strange mix of food that I stole from people also did not help my cause at all. Sitting in my chair, waiting for them to call novice prose, possibly hearing my name as a winner churned my excited tummy even faster. Just sitting in that chair was killing me slowly. “Next is novice prose.” I heard the award lady call out to the audience. I sat up in my chair and waited. I was waiting for my name to be called. She called the first name for fourth place. It was not mine. My friend turned to me and excited babbled something about me placing something but I was focused on the words the award lady was speaking. The second name called was a boy from another school, obviously still not me. It was now up between my friend and I, both from the same school. I could feel my stomach doing the puke dance inside me, but I was not budging until I knew who …show more content…
I stood up shakily, with a terrified look on my face. The man handing out awards looked uncomfortable with my face when I went up there to accept my trophy. I sat back down as my friend battered me with excitement, but this time i joined in because it was my first tournament and I had gotten a first place, and i was very excited. My stomach had settled for now, but it was not going to be the last I was going to hear from it. The tournament was over and we changed back into our “normal clothes”, or pajamas. The excitement and anxiety had built up to an all time high, but i did not feel a strong urge to throw up. Before we left for home though, we stopped at Taco Bell and Fred Meyers. Thinking that my stomach was calling for food, not trying to get rid of it, a friend and I ran to Fred Meyers to buy the most food we could for the ride home. We bought thirty dollars worth of frosting, pringles, lemonade, and cheese, thinking that would keep us full for the three hours back to

I joined my school’s wrestling team during my junior year of high school and went into this new environment with 0 years of prior training and 16 years of “Girls don’t really wrestle”. I was determined to excel during my first wrestling experience to challenge the skepticism that surrounded girl wrestlers. Despite this resolve, I was terrified at the thought of having to actually wrestle someone, so when I found out that my first wrestling match would be against a small, unassuming girl 20 pounds lighter than me, I was relieved. With newfound hope, I went into my match thinking, “How could I possibly lose to someone half my size?”…

I would consider myself moderately anxious about public speaking. I remember the first few communication apprehensions I experienced in my personal and work life. With my personal experience, I was at church when I shared a testimony with the bible study. With my work encounter, I had to conduct status updates for two areas during project implementations and testing phases with a large group. In both situations, my heart pounded loudly right before I spoke and when the words came out of my mouth, I felt like I had to speak quickly like Speedy Gonzalez!…

Walking on to the Lucas Oil turf as a Carmel Marching Greyhound for awards at Grand National finals after an exhilarating performance of “What a Tangled Web We Weave” was a feeling of pure accomplishment. As a sophomore, I had done this once before, but this time was different. The whole band knew we were in the running for the national title. Avon and Broken Arrow were our biggest competitors. Earlier in the season we won ISSMA state, so coming into nationals we knew we had a pretty good chance of being exceptionally good.…
