Personal Narrative: My Impact On The Environment

I’m one of those people. The kind who notices every piece of litter along the roadside, who cringes at the sight of stores lit up after close, rescues recyclables from trashcans, and silently judges anyone who drinks bottled water, who can only look at nature photography in small doses because the earth is so beautiful I could literally cry! You know, that kind. Frankly, I could be far worse. I try to rein in my rampant environmentalism to tolerable levels. Yet, the thought of my impact on the environment, and that of those around me, is never far from my mind. In my defense, I was raised by avid outdoorsmen and environmentalist parents. They grew up in a time when being outside was basically the only entertainment afforded to children, and saw no reason I should feel differently. I was indoctrinated from birth to deeply appreciate nature, to compost, garden, recycle, “leave no trace”, “Why are there so many lights on?!”, “Leave some water for the fish!”, “If you’re cold, get a blanket!”. I never stood a chance. My overt environmentalist ways fizzled out a bit in my teen …show more content…
My time in the outdoors helped shape the person I am today, and I find the best aspects of myself have been cultivated by those experiences. This was never more evident than during my time with the Conservation Corps. My tenacity was repeatedly put to the test during work trips, spending 10 hour days out in the field, only to return to a meal cooked outside and a hard tent floor at night. My physical and mental strength pushed to the limit while working in 110º heat. My capacity to adapt tested by each new location and project. My thirst for knowledge quenched by the wisdom of each new project host. While my amiable disposition and ability to enjoy the company of others was renewed around many campfires, and weeks without cell service or Internet. Little else has made me feel more humble than the awareness of being alone in

Well, writer and activist Derrick Jensen states “I don’t know about you, but whenever I attend some ‘green’ conference, I know I’m supposed to leave feeling inspired and energized, but instead I feel heart broken, discouraged, defeated, and lied to” (Jensen, 124). Although I have never been to a meeting about the environment, I enjoy listening to other people talk about ways to help it and make i?t a better place for us all to…

I have a deep love for the Wilderness and believe that we need to continue to conserve it. “...wilderness takes us to something far older and deeper, returns all of us, regardless of race or nationality to one and the same place…”(Claggett 17). It took me a while to distance myself from the bubble that is the Internet to realise the importance of nature but I have. The Internet can consume the lives of people and taking time to distinguish it from necessity and importance can help a great deal in not becoming immersed in…

As the documentary goes on they show how much trash they had generated in one week, and that was a moment that I noticed how much trash I actually produce at home, because of the amount of snacks and things that come in packages I buy and consume in a week, and I realized that reducing the amount of trash that I produce in a week is one of the main things that I have to change in my life in order to be more…

In the same nature as everything else in the world, there are spectrums of people holding different beliefs involving the environment. There are extreme activists who conserve as much of the planet’s resources as possible, just as there are some on the opposite end of the spectrum who do not consider the effects their daily lives have on the environment. However, much of the population more than likely falls in the middle of the spectrum. I would consider myself somewhere between the middle and an environmentalist. Though, after taking the Ecological Footprint Calculator Quiz, I soon realized I am not as much as preservationist as I thought.…

I have been able to experience life and death in nature’s atmosphere, grow a respect and love for all that is in it, and at the same time realize the important factors that everything plays to each stage of life. I have been able to experience freedom of mind through learning to be accountable for my actions at an early age and if I made a bad choice, it could lead to deadly consequences, and good choices led me to amazing experiences. I learned a freedom of education that most don’t get to experience through living life in nature and its habitat. I learned how to survive and how to stay safe in an environment that most would die in, because they don’t know what’s in the desert or how to find what’s needed to survive. I learned a freedom of self-reliance; I know in my life I have to work for what I want.…

The Wyoming backcountry is stunning. There is an infinite blanket of trees in every direction. The sky has two moods either happy: blue with cotton ball clouds or angry: a stormy scary black color. The air smells like sage and pine -- fresh and crisp. July, 2015, along with 11 close friends, 2 counselors, and a trip leader I went hiking in the backcountry of Wyoming on a 6 day backpacking trip.…

Every Saturday morning, I go to the same watershed nature center that Mrs. Klenke took my class to and teach other young students about the importance of preserving the environment. I am also founding the Green LYFE Network, an environmental nonprofit organization, that is dedicated to empowering students to speak up on the issues of climate change to their local governments and inform their peers on the importance of preserving the environment. So far, the Green LYFE Network has formed three branches across Illinois, and its message has reached individuals in both Africa and Europe. While Mrs. Klenke ranks as my least favorite teacher, eventually being fired for her alcoholism, she has had a significant influence on my life.…

I´m being quite useful.” This notion that small-scale harm to the environment for human benefit is how I imagine most of the environmentally damaging industrial companies started. The notion of “it’s not too bad, human’s need goods and if someone’s going to make money off of it, it ought to be me!” Capitalism and the idea of “The American Dream” have graced our society with displaced wildlife, rampant pollution, lack of sustainable practices, and all the while greed and ignorance are flourishing. Once these small scale industries learned how much money there was to be made by privatizing profits and publicizing the costs, it’s no wonder we’re in this predicament.…

When I grow up, I want to change the world! Changing the world one day would make me feel really good. Three ways I would change the world are: make sure everyone has a shelter to live in; help more lost, sick, and hurt animals, and make sure no one is hungry. I would like to help homeless people have a nice place to stay. When I’m driving downtown I see a lot of homeless people on the streets; dirty, and sad.…

I think that we, especially at the University of Michigan, tend to isolate ourselves in our bubble of the student body and Ann Arbor, not wanting to deal with the truths in the outside world that we instead ignore. I think it is, therefore, more important than ever to engage the general population concerning the environment, trying to dispel any major misconceptions on the way. With the recent election and the election of a president who is more opposed to the EPA, environmentalism, and the idea of climate change as fact, than any other in recent history, it is unsettling and dangerous to the continuation of the world. Trump sees environmental protection as the direct opponent of economic progress, and millions of Americans mistakenly agree with him. He doubts climate change and is appointing billionaires who agree with this, going as far to threaten removing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement.…

Sensitive America The Article, “Green Guilt” proposed that the guilt formerly derived from religious belief is being replaced by social movements such as environmentalism. The author, Steven Asma, relates the almost obsessive green habits to the high moral standards set by various religions, namely Christianity. He goes even further to proclaim that environmentalism is a substitute for religion. You can argue that there are some similarities between the two, but it is misleading to compare the guilt of straying from religious values to the guilt of neglecting the environment.…

Today, more Americans are beginning to value nature and realize the important role it plays in our world. After seeing how much damage society has caused with pollution and deforestation, people recognize the need to respect the Earth.
