for a better life. I am proud to say that I am Mexican American, growing up my first language was Spanish; therefore all I heard and saw was in Spanish. Until I began school it is when I began to learn how to speak English. Learning how to speak English was a struggle for me at first because at home Spanish was the only language spoken. For this reason, I couldn't practice reading, writing, or speaking English with my parents because they didn’t know if I was right or wrong, they weren’t able to correct me if I was wrong since they themselves didn’t know the language. My siblings would speak English, but for some reason when we talked, we would speak in Spanish. I guess because we were comfortable with that language since it was our first. I learned to discover who I am through all these obstacles and culture backgrounds. Through people judging me and my family because we were Mexican we were able to prove them wrong. And that we are not ashamed of our roots and how our culture has shaped us. Education, language, and place shaped identity have a lot to do when one is self discovering themselves or being aware of where they came
