For the most part, I have had teachers that really love to teach and truly care about their students. I had a really awesome gym teacher who would go out of her way to come to sporting events and other extracurricular activities just to support her students in areas of their lives other than their academics. I found that I did much better in the class and retained the information better when my teachers genuinely showed an interest in me and the other students. I was lucky to have quite a few of these awesome teachers. From reading the Anyon piece in class, I was sad to learn that many teachers do not have this drive to teach their students to the best of their ability and often times they did not really worry about whether their students succeeded or not. Many of the teachers explained in the Anyon piece were just doing the minimum in order to get by and their students could tell. Not having a diverse student population did not have very many disadvantages academically; however, it did have disadvantages for the students socially. I was unaware of how many different races and cultures were right in my community simply because my school was not diverse. Having a diverse student population allows other students to learn about other cultures from a first hand point of view as well as giving them a more open mind and allowing them to be more accepting of people who are not exactly like them. This aspect of school stands out to me because diversity is one of the biggest issues that schools try to remedy, but the problem is still quite prevalent among most schools. I believe that the issue of diversity is not just a school-wide issue, but also a community-wide issue. We spoke in detail about “White Flight” in class discussions, and I believe this contributes greatly to the lack of diversity in schools in many areas such as where I went to school. The people
