Before I became a college student, I was terrified about taking English courses. The techniques for writing a thesis or an essay was something I felt I had never mastered. Above and beyond being terrified of English, I had another dilemma, I hadn’t been in a school setting for the 30 years prior to pursuing my college degree. During the years after my graduation from high school, I spent endless hours reading books. I prefer reading a book over watching a movie. My love for reading helped me to become a better writer. Subsequently, I began paying attention to the way other authors had written in books, magazines, news articles etc. While being observant of the way other writers wrote, I developed an awareness of the many mistakes I made in my own writing.
My initial relationship with reading started at an early age. Reading daily short stories in elementary school triggered me to develop an interest in reading. During the 1970s, when I was attending elementary school, there were level reading books that every student in my elementary school was required to read. As each student …show more content…
Writing freely allows me to organize my thoughts. It helps me in my career as well as my personal life. For instance, when I was dating, I would write letters and emails to my significant other instead of trying to communicate face-to-face. This prevented me from being constantly interrupted. Once I had completed my thoughts in writing, I would read and revise what I’d written immediately, then I would wait a while before reading and revising it again. Oftentimes, while I was angry, I’d write letters or emails that were never sent because time had passed, my anger had subsided or I’d found comfort by simply writing out my feelings at the time when I was angry.
