A time in high school, I thought I had cavities and went to see the dentist. It was my first ever visit to the dentist and I was quite apprehensive about it. During my consultation, the dentist who had asked for an x ray of my molars explained to me that I did not have cavities. She also showed me my wisdom teeth in the x ray, which were still in development explaining that I may have to extract them because they were inclined towards my second molars. Despite the mention of a probable extraction, she was very nice and made me feel very at ease. She did a cleaning for me and taught me how to floss. That was my first ever encounter with a dentist and contrary to the “horror stories” I had heard about going to a dentist, I had a pleasant experience …show more content…
I believe that this experience made me mature more than I probably would ever have if I were in Ghana, because for the first time in my life I had to solely take care of every issue on my own and make my own decisions. It made me realize that, true goes the saying that “nothing is too difficult if you really want something in life”, no matter how difficult, you will always find the strength to pursue something provided you really want that thing. One example was about my first two years in dental school in Brazil. Those two years were my most challenging years in Brazil, having to learn Portuguese combined with the tight regime in dental school. I had lots of chapters to read and with every line I read, I had to pick up a dictionary to translate a word I did not understand or the sentence did not just make any sense to me. My grades were terrible at the beginning of the course but with persistence, things got easier as I had a better grip on the language. My experience in Brazil today, I can comfortably say has made me more welcoming to different cultures because I met so many people from all walks of life and not just Brazilians. I am more sensitive to the needs of others because I know how it feels to be the different girl from a different country with a different culture since I was the only foreigner in my class. For example, I had a class two classification of angel and my orthodontist has changed my smile so much just by using braces and his knowledge in Orthodontics. Dentistry is a beautiful and very dynamic profession and I think I wouldn’t have been happier in any other profession.
With some years of practice and experience in the Unites States, I intend to open a dental clinic or dental clinics in the remote parts of Ghana, especially in the northern part of Ghana like my hometown, where dental care is not easily accessible. I also intend to set up an NGO and working with some dental colleges, provide free dental care at these clinics for the people in those areas on a frequent
