The saying goes that your first impression is made within seven seconds. When I first learned about Fordham, I saw a juxtaposition of a suburban campus in an urban, bustling city. This fascinated me. New York is a vertical city of grey streets and yellow cabs, not green campuses. This truly makes Fordham distinct.…

I believe I am fully qualified to become an Army Warrant Officer for many reasons. The first is that I feel I have reached a rank that marks the culmination of my operational career. At this stage in the Army as a Staff Sergeant, I continually fulfill duty positions that are above and beyond my pay grade in both the garrison and deployed environments. This is best exemplified in my recent deployment with 1st Special Forces Group in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. As a Staff Sergeant, I served as the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Iraq (CJSOTF-I) Counterintelligence (CI) Coordinating Authority, which is doctrinally a Chief Warrant Officer Three billet.…

Kennedy (JFK) High School. From the parking lot into the school, I see Kennedy ’s quote, painted on the edge of the entrance, stating, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Many other quotes by graduating classes were painted on the edge of the hallway overheads with the year underneath and all meant to inspire people. Tall, lush trees provide shade, protecting me from sunshine and heat of the afternoon sunlight.…

The lack of involvement from United States’ strong allies such as France, in addition to the eccentric and indifferent attitude towards American politics is well portrayed by one of the Washington Semester students, Olivier Becheras. A tiny room on the eighth floor of the Berkshire Apartments is where Olivier resides in and refers to as his “personal mancave.” Dressed in black sports shorts and a sweatshirt, he looked distinct and “un-American.” As we spoke about the 2016 Presidential Elections, I noticed his precise and detailed understanding of the elections, yet extreme apathy towards it. “I don’t care about American politics,” he said, with a disparaging attitude as he chuckled and glared at his comforter, with an American flag cover.…

Historians and International Relations scholars have long had a relationship that allows for interworking, while distinct differences still remain separating the two. In studying the past, a historian and an international relations scholar would take into account the past as a force that generates the questions and theories of both parties. On the other hand, there lies a difference in the way that the historian would place more emphasis on recounting history and international events for their own sake. The IR scholars would contrastingly use historical events as ways to additionally supporting or discrediting a theoretical hypothesis they have proposed. In this way, their differences in methodology and objectives can be highlighted.…

When I decided to make a career change two years ago and pursue a graduate degree, I was very much interested in applying for the American Studies program at Columbia. What attracted me to the program was the interdisciplinary approach of American Studies as developed under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race. American Studies not only involves the intersection of history and literature -- which are among my primary interests -- but it is also a field that promotes the confluence and integration of multiple areas of study (ethnography, economics, and political science, etc.) In other words, what appeals to me about American Studies is that it avoids the insularity of the more established areas of the humanities…
