Ideal Career Progression

I started school at age thirteen; my parents kept my seven brothers and I out of the public school system because their religion labeled it “corrupt and fraudulent.” The “homeschooling” I received consisted of cleaning with my mother and gardening for my father. The only English or math I learned was what I was able to teach myself from some textbooks we had at home.

After living in isolation for most of my life, I entered a public school at 8th grade. For the first time in my life I was required to speak English, socialize with people outside of my family, and cram eight years of curriculum into one school year. My first memories of school are of intimidation. I did not know anyone or anything, and I was assigned remedial courses because we only speak Spanish at home.

Life and learning are long distance races. College will be the next step in my journey with an exciting opportunity to learn from real experts in the fields of business, computers and graphic arts. My ideal career would combine business marketing, technology and design. Which could be working as a creative director for Disney, joining a Silicon Valley start-up or even establishing my own business.
Looking back I can see that my core values and strengths were honed by my years of isolation. First I developed the skills to teach myself from materials at hand. This skill allowed me to learn how to program computers, design graphics, write well, and make formal presentations. Secondly, eight years of never being recognized for anything left me hungry for honors and academic success. Standing away from the larger community as a child created an intense desire in me to connect with it and serve.
