Personal Narrative: My Grandmother And Me

Every Saturday, I distinctly recall the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The radio would be playing in the background, masked by the overwhelming chatter occurring throughout the house. So many things happening in such a small space: what I remember most, is the sound of laughter, and the smiles that surrounded me. My grandpa hollering because he cannot hear the television, my mother still drowsy from the sleepless night, My grandmother singing to the radio that was barely audible over the commotion, and me, invariably sat looking at all that surrounded me, enthralled at how lucky I was to have a heart so full. My family so different to most, but so beautiful to me, instilled in me such a strong sense of independence, strength and determination. …show more content…
It was quite interesting growing up in a house filled with three generations of O’mara women. My grandmother, my mother, and myself living under one roof taught me to cherish my background and heritage. While I was the spitting image of my mother, my mother is the spitting image of my grandmother. I never quite realize just how much I am made up of both of these women I am one woman made from one part of each woman. Gail Lumet Buckley wrote in her book The Hornes, “Family faces are magic mirrors. Looking at people who belong to us, we see the past, present and future. We make discoveries about ourselves.” As I aged into adulthood I began to find my own self, while I always thought I was my mother’s daughter I realized I contained so many attributes from my …show more content…
It was the dress, it was those moments that made me realize that I was beautiful not matter what the world would say. There are so many memories that I hold dear and cherish so deeply when thinking about my grandmother, but the thing I cherish the most from her, is the woman she gave me as a

In early August of 2012, my dad and I decided to visit my Grandpa and Grandma Hurt in Florida. We hadn’t seen them in a couple years and it was time to spend quality time with them because time goes quickly, and you never know what could happen. The car ride seemed forever, but I was so excited to go to Florida. The car ride was almost unbearable to sit hour after hour. The only peculiar thought about this trip, is that my grandpa was sick, and the doctors did not know what exactly was wrong.…

Family Introduction Creating this genogram was a difficult task for me because my parents and their siblings hardly communicate with each other anymore. Ever since the passing of both my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, the families have simply fallen apart. Many relatives have distanced themselves from their extended families, and no longer have a desire to interact with their siblings or cousins. Sociopolitical and spiritual issues have caused some members of both families to harbor resentment against one another.…

Every Christmas Eve our family gathers around the coffee table in our apartment in New York City. During the day we go to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and buy chocolate candies from the Greenwood Pastry on the corner. Uncle Riley leads the way as we walk the streets until the light begins to fade between the office towers and the crippled gargoyles forever perched on the corners of the buildings that illuminate a golden age gone by. We laugh together and reminisce about the previous Christmases we have spent together. The elevator seems quieter on these nights, almost as if it has a respect for the holiday, but I know it’s just because we’re all crammed in there together.…

If I were able to speak to anyone that is dead I would choose my grandma. I would choose her because 3 years before she passed away, she had really bad alzheimer's that was eating away at her brain so she didn’t recognize who we were, she didn’t know I was her grandchild and my mom was her daughter. Her memory was slowly going away as years and days would pass, she would wake up and not know who someone was, she would be all confused on where she was. She didn't recognize any family except her husband even though she didn’t know he was her husband she would always tell him that she likes him. I would have a lot of questions for her just like Odysseus had for his mother when he saw her, he wanted to know how she was and how she got to where…

“My grandma is asking, ‘How are you?’.” That is a common phrase I have been saying since I was little. Translating for my grandparents has become second nature for me because I do it so often. All of my grandparents were born and raised in Portugal and moved to different countries to work and create a life for their families. Because of this, my mother was born in America and my father was born in Venezuela.…

I was maybe 6 years old when I watched my Mom drive away without me for the first time. My mother and her grandmother were yelling back and forth at the front door of our small house. I was little, so I sat and listened in the hallway, across from the door, trying to figure out what they were fighting about. It was a conversation I had heard before about my Mom’s recent decision to move to New York. My Granma obviously didn 't agree with it because she was young and had no way to support a little girl in a new place.…

By they providing me with these important things that I needed to know, I 'm stronger, better equipped and more understanding to things I encounter in my life. Having family that’s full of wisdom and of kind nature has been the biggest gift that they could have ever given to me; my mother, father and Aunt Michelle were the main people in my life proving me with an essential guidance before it was even relevant to me for example, how to be happy all by myself, how love the little moments and victories that happen to me, and of course the how to pay bills and then…

The year was 1938; fleeing from the Italian fascist Mussolini’s’ encroachment of Greece my great-grandfather and great-grandmother came to the United States settling in a small city of Hialeah which resided just outside the city of Miami, FL. In January 1, 1940 my grandmother (Linda) was born at Jackson Memorial Hospital and soon after my great-grandfather left to find his riches in the north and left his family in Hialeah. So my great-grandmother sold what she owned (her body) to the military personal that were stationed at Homestead AFB. By 1950 my grandmother had eight half siblings, all living in a 3 bedroom house. My great-grandmother had a rule that she imposed onto her children, and that rule was when you turn 18 you have 2-weeks to find a job and get out of the house.…

A lesson is something you learn from a certain situation. Learning something is hard, but easy at the same time. A lesson from a random elderly is different from learning a lesson from a loved elderly. There was a time when I learned the most important lesson in my life, that I shall always remember, “You have to lose in order to learn how to win”. About 4 years ago I was playing basketball in my small town where my mom grow up called Johnsonville.…
