My Hobby Cooking Essay

Decent Essays
It all began four years ago, when my brother graduated from culinary arts. From that day I started to get interested about food and how was it made. In some way I can say that he encouraged me to cook. Ever since four years ago, I cook three times a week and he does the rest. Cooking is a very interesting hobby. To begin with, cooking is a great idea when you want to chill in your own home and have an excellent time at the same time. If you want to be at your house just chilling and having a good time, then cooking is what you might want to do, not only because you do not need to go out, but also because you can relax and enjoy the time that you want to spent just being you, or maybe with some friends. For example, if you …show more content…
For example, when I cook, I get more interested about the names of vegetables, spices, even about the different types of meat. For example, when I was living in Caracas with my two brothers, one called me and asked me if I could go to the supermarket and buy some thyme, I did not know what that was, but I went to buy it anyway, so, when I was there, I had to ask for help because I did not know what I was looking for. Now, with all the knowledge that my brother and books have taught me, I can go to the supermarket and differentiate between thyme and parsley. However, this requires time and effort because it is not an easy thing to learn. I remember one time when I was trying to do some cupcakes, and I used for the very first time the kitchen aid. I was doing the mix, and I put it all in the kitchen aid and leave it there. Minutes later I turned it off and put the mix on the bowl ready to bake, but the cupcakes never went up because I put the mix too long in the machine. That is when I realized that I had to learn much more about how to use the things in the kitchen. Another thing that you learn when you pass a long time cooking is how to cut vegetables tinier and faster than usual, just like a chef. For example, it takes more than five minutes to cut an onion really thin, but now that my brother showed me how to grab the knife so I can cut the onions faster, it takes me less than two minutes to cut an

Many children and adults spend less time preparing food and more time eating processed food or fast food (Ng, Popkin, and Smith, 2013). If families and individuals learned how to prepare food, then they are more likely to use the skill. My mother taught me how to prepare my lunches before the week started. This has helped me eat healthy and save money by not eating fast food during college. Creating nutrition and cooking classes would also align with Health People 2020’s goals because they are targeting teaching the community healthy behaviors and habits, along with improving the behaviors in all groups of the…

In an ironic twist, United States Vice-President Richard Nixon had a chance for a meeting with the Soviet Unions’ Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, at an American showcase exposition in 1959. Initially intended as a tour to highlight what a new $ 14,000 home is like in America, the discussion quickly changed directions and a debate ensued between the two leaders about the merits of communism and capitalism (Richmond, 2009). The kitchen of the home was well equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator, and a range, and was built to demonstrate what the typical American worker could own (Richmond, 2009). The Kitchen Debate, as the meeting is now called, opened up additional conversations, discussions, and exchanges between the two countries not only…

Sharing food with my family helps us learn the importance of family and cultural traditions. In my family while having dinner we are not allowed to use phones because my dad says that mealtime is family time, so we should only concentrate on eating and talking with family members. Extended family gatherings around food are part of Indian tradition. Our extended family gathering is where more than two or three families get together and make our traditional foods. As my dad says, nobody knows what tomorrow holds so spend time with the people who love you and the people you love.…

The strongest person in the world might be able to tackle any physical obstacle, but mental stress can be much more difficult. The nuance with mental stress is that different environments affect people in different ways, and in different magnitudes. Cathy Davidson’s “Project Classroom Makeover”, Susan Faludi’s “The Naked Citadel”, and Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Power of Context”, all describe scenarios with environments that are either stressful and negative, or relaxed and positive. An individual’s identity is minimally impacted in positive environments and drastically affected in negative environments.…

Raised in a Puerto Rican household has shaped my view and choices of foods. Like most Latin American plates, traditional Puerto Rican dishes consist of fried foods. It was not until I started college that I began to realize the negative effects that it had on my health as well as trying new ways to continue eating my traditional dishes without it being so unhealthy. Reflecting back on the changes in relationship I have had with food throughout the years, I have become more understanding on the ideas and findings discussed in the course readings. Gender, class, ethnicity and culture has shaped my relationship with food one way or another.…

From a young age, my parents have always enforced the idea of eating healthy constantly badgering me to eat my vegetables or have a piece of protein with my meals. Although I might not have understood why their reprimanding was important, over the course of these last few weeks in biology I have come to realize that having a sound diet in many ways encompasses what it means to be healthy and live life to its fullest. By actively moderating, recording, and learning about what I have been eating I can now clearly understand that my parents were right to encourage healthy eating in my home. My parent, specifically my mother, was always the one who cooked and influenced my healthy eating at a young age. When looking at my food logs for this…

I started watching what I ate and slowly enough with consistency and diet, I lost 40 pounds before entering high school.
