Have you ever been part of a community that was as close as a family? My high school varsity football team was my second family for three years and even longer because I had grown up with most of these guys. Throughout my high school career, they were there for me through hardships and struggles that came with being a student-athlete. Great memories were made through the brutal practices, tough opponents, and dedication. I have evolved into the man I am today because of many reasons, but the sport of football has had quite some significance. I began as a young boy who was in awe of American football. I grew up watching and playing the sport which was also known as the true football, “fútbol”, yet there was something in me that wanted to try something new as an 8th grader. Watching American football on Sundays with my father was what I looked forward to the most at the end of the weekend. The helmets cracking, student section getting wild, and being under the lights on Friday night is just a taste of what high school football is. As I look back at my very first varsity football game and having only 2 years of experience, I have no regrets. Although we did have one of our most dreadful seasons at 1-7, we looked forward. I will always treasure the film and game clips I have saved on my computer’s hard drive. If I ever have children some day, I hope to share this treasure with them. If I could share one piece of advice with anyone it would be to always look forward. When adversity hits, you have to know how to handle

In a topic that is widely discussed on campus and seems like a no brainer to many has had a bunch of people working, wondering, and wishing. From 1897 to 1986 Wichita State University played competitive football at many different levels including the KCAC, CIAC, and our current conference of the Missouri Valley. Boasting a 375-402-47 record and 14 conference titles the Shockers were at best a sub-par team. Over history the Shocker football team endured some tough times and none were more wrenching than the plane crash in 1970.
