Those Four Words Every child is an artist. As a child, I crafted adventures with my brother. James, the noble knight, and I, the warrior princess Courtney, would prance around our vast kingdom, swinging cardboard swords at the fierce, fire-breathing dragons. Each eve, just as the sun began to dip below the horizon, my father would slay the dragon. He was the grandest king in all the land. One night, however, as the moon howled in the blackest of skies, the king changed. It was at this very moment that my mother, the benevolent queen, stowed James and I away in the dungeon of a friend’s loft. I would later come to realize that my father was not a hero. My father, was, is and will forever be the greatest villain my life has ever encountered. …show more content…
The stiff air mattress was about as comfortable to lay on as the concrete floor that lie underneath. The white brick walls were cold and the bookshelf across the room was coated in dust. As James arose next to me, I remembered that we were here for an adventure. We began our quest to rid this home of any dragons or warlocks. As the search continued we stumbled upon a SAGA gaming system. Once we figured out how to work the device we decided to continue our adventure inside the realm of Sonic the Hedgehog. After an hour of exploring with the mysterious blue hedgehog our mother appeared out of a dark corner. As I turned toward her I noticed that she was not in her usual blue jeans and T-shirt. Instead she was inside a black pantsuit. I couldn’t help but notice her red, puffy cheeks and downcast face. This was serious business so James and I turned off the SAGA. Once we turned back to her, she had begun sniffling and tears were streaming down her face. I then reassured my mother that her brave children had already taken out all the monsters in the area so she was safe. My mother glanced at us, with a soft smile and a gentle voice, asked us to find a comfy chair to sit …show more content…
As soon as I sat I began bouncing on the cushion. For some unknown reason James decided to stay on the cold, unbreakable concrete. My mother stood next to me, only taller than me by a few inches. I contemplated making a joke about how small she was, like my father always did, but I figured I would wait for a better time to pull that joke out of my pocket. My mother then pulled me out of my thoughts by asking if James or I had any memories from the night before. James and I just stared at each other for a few seconds with blank expressions. I decided to remind my mother that James and I had been asleep until she had awoken us and brought us to this cold, white basement. I made sure to let her know that James and I had been well behaved and hadn’t broken anything like other times we had visited places. My mother sniffled and giggled at me; she then said that I didn’t need to worry, we weren’t getting in trouble. My mother then asked if it was okay for her to explain why we were hiding in this basement and why we left so late at night. James and I looked at each other curiously and granted her

A silence stretches long between us. Layna dabs at her eyes with the sleeve of her thin sweater, then reaches down and grasps my red-tipped fingers as we approach our mother’s house. Without a word, we step up onto the porch stairs that rasp in complaint, and I hold my breath, waiting for the curtains to swish, and the glimpse of Mom’s beaming face before she bustled towards the front door in her excitement to see us, throwing open the door to smother us in hugs, all wrinkled skin and senior sweat, and the scent of home.…
