My Hero's Journey-Personal Narrative

The wind caressed my cheek in a soft embrace as it blew cold wispy kisses on my skin, the dark had taken over about an hour past, and the sky was filled with dazzling stars and a moon so ominous it sent chills down my spine. The ships had set sail this morning, leaving my home behind in hopes of a brighter life, a better future. As I had taken my first step onto the old ship, the floorboards creaked and groaned reminding me of the home I left. I looked out, marvelling in the darkness that surrounded me. The dancing stars were the only light I had, but back at home I had no other source of light either. I heard creaking behind me, turning slowly I saw an old man standing there with wrinkles and a cane.
 ‘Lucinda, supper is almost ready. I think it’s best you come in now, I don’t want you catching a cold.’ Papa moved and put a hand on my shoulder, the other holding steadily onto his cane. Ever since I could remember papa has had that cane, he once told me that he was born with it like a third leg. But every time I would ask he’d spur up some story rather than the truth, so I just don’t ask him any more.
 ‘Yes papa,’ I replied as I looped my arm through his elbow. Papa had to walk much slower, and because of this sometimes it would feel like a simple walk across the room would take a millennia to achieve. As I opened up the old wooden door, we were swarmed instantly with the smell of grog, curry and sweat. Immediately the cold that had consumed me dispersed, and I started pulling off my ratted and torn coat. As I peeled it off I could feel eyes on me, it was no secret that woman were not suppose to be on ships due to bad luck.
