My Hero's Journey-Personal Narrative

Bryan was special. He was also a donkey, and he was stuck with us for two days. My friend and I were in Philmont Scout camp, a high adventure backpacking trip that I went to last summer. The trip was one of the best experiences of my life, something that I look back on with fondness now, rather than I did at the time. About three quarters through our ten day trek we stayed the night at the old base camp, and had dutch oven food, showers, and root beer. It set us in high spirits for the rest of the trip. The next morning we picked out our donkey. Out of the 30 or 40 donkeys, one person in our group pointed out Bryan, so we picked him. We named him Bryan, though that wasn’t his real name, but we thought it described him pretty well. When we …show more content…

Okay, no big deal, so we turned back and found the right part of the trail. Now at this part of the trail, there was a mini stream, maybe 3 inches deep, and 2 or 3 feet across. This is where it got frustrating. At first we thought of this as no big deal, but Bryan was adamant about not crossing it. Finally, after too long, he started moving, very slowly but it didn’t matter. After we got across we still had a small mountain to climb. The climb was rough because of our backpacks, but at least Bryan was moving. We stopped every 2 minutes or so at first, but then it started to rain. We started climbing as quickly as we could, one person even threw up. Finally getting to the top we set up camp and

Kneeling, I tore strips of cloth from my pants and wound them around my bare feet. I made each movement slowly and deliberately, trying to regain my composure. After a few moments, I stood and ran for the glimmering water in the distance. If I could make the river, I could float downstream to camp; if I made it to the river, I would live. As I sprinted into the distance, I heard a noise and I looked behind me.…

Over the years and years spent on studying mythology, Joseph Campbell came up with the concept of The Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey states that all hero’s travel in a similar path and go through many similar stages that’ll lead them to their reward. However, not every hero’s journey has to involve obstacles as in slaying a dragon or trying to save the world. In my case, I had to do nothing but trying to make it through sixth grade year. Sadly, sixth grade was the year that I faced the most challenges, real world challenges at least.…

Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…
