The summer of my 9th year, I won my first soccer tournament. I’ve been playing soccer since i was 4. After years and years of coming in third or fourth place, our team finally made it to the top. We received a big trophy for the team and metals for each player. i received a trophy of my very own for scoring the winning goal. I was expecting a mini celebration like a family dinner or something but ever since my parents got separated, things have been going downhill. We moved into an apartment, mom got a new job, and I've been spending more time with my little sister Ava.

Before Ava came, every August 12, mom would put a picnic blanket out on the backyard and mom, dad, and i would lay on our backs and wait for the light show to begin. No matter how busy our day was, we were determined to watch the perseid meteor shower every year. I remember the first time watching it i asked, “Dad what is that? Is that a shooting star?”

Nasa’s spitzer and Hubble space telescopes have discovered a massive galaxy creating more and more new stars. The way that this massive cluster has been formed so quickly is by feeding off gases from other galaxies. Tracy Webb of McGill University explained that usually a star in the center of a galaxy is old and dead, but this new cluster within this rare galaxy is creating new stars very quickly by merging with other smaller galaxies. Clusters are families of galaxies bound together by the ties of gravity. This new cluster being studied is referred to as SpARCS 1049+56.…

Theory on Lithium in Stars May Be Confirmed The light chemical element lithium is one of the few elements that is predicted to have been created by the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago. But understanding the amounts of lithium observed in stars around us today in the Universe has given astronomers headaches. Most heavy elements are produced during supernovae, as massive stars explode in their death throes. However, these events were believed to be too rare to produce the vast amount of lithuim seen in the modern universe.…

Andrew Stephens Mr. Hamed Pour-Imani ASTR 2001L 4 August 2016 Night Lab Report On July 15 our astronomy lab met on the roof of Kimpel Hall to observe several objects in our night’s sky. Using a 10-inch diameter telescope we were lucky enough to have a mostly clear sky to view in this order: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon. Viewing these celestial bodies in person is truly one of the most exciting and core tenets of astronomy. With our telescope we were able to see firsthand and notice some of the distinct characteristics of the different objects.…

One day I was sitting in my room trying to do my homework when all of a sudden a bright object flew right by my window and loudly landed in the yard. The noise was really loud, and it scared the living daylight out of me. My parents were on vacation, so at this point, there were many thoughts going through my head like, this is the end of the world, or aliens are invading. I mustered up some strength and carefully walked outside to investigate the bright object. I grabbed my bat, and finally after a while, I made it out to the area of impact, and right before my eyes was a real life spacecraft.…

I can say that I never actually took the time to really think about meteors or comets nor did I bother to read up on either of the subjects. However, once I read about them both I was thoroughly intrigued. Meteors are about the size of a baseball and can reach speeds up to 30,000 miles per hour. The heat they hold is more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit and they also glow.…

My passion for the cosmos was born during my last day at the Maccabiah Sport Games in July of 2017. I lay on my bed and switched on the TV with no preconceived thought of a channel in mind. I was perfectly content watching what National Geographic had to offer: The Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey by Neil deGrasse Tyson. The show surpassed my expectations in every way. Previously I had only taken a passing interest in astronomy, such as during our occasional visits to the game reserve.…

Science has revolutionized our world with unimaginable advancements in technology. From the brilliant minds of William Whewell (who coined the English word “science”) to the modern day scientist like Stephen William Hawking (who contributed to the vast amount of today’s knowledge on cosmology and quantum gravity). Furthermore, science has become so advanced in this day-in-age that it has been split apart into different sections that each cover a broad range of technological information, research, and experiments. Since the topic of science is so broad, we will just discuss different types of science and how they apply to our current modern day life.…
