She ensured that my mother got a part time job when she was on holiday and after school. She taught my mother to plan so that the money she saved was kept aside for a specific noble purpose such as the down payment of a mortgage or for starting out a business. Looking back to all the things that she encouraged her children to do so as to get higher income; my grandmother might have seemed frugal. However, I look at my mother and her siblings, and the personal financial planning knowledge that she has passed onto her family, and understand that being frugal at the time was needed and is now appreciated. The knowledge has also been passed onto my generation, and I intend on using it so as to maximize on the financial knowledge and planning that I hold and will continue to use. My family’s greatest concern, at a young age was getting good education. My grandparents and parents held the belief that good education was the basis for a good future as it would assist one in getting a good job. They also believed that a good education taught one the needed life experiences and not just allowing an individual to be smart in terms of the books that they had read. The highest level of discrimination was against the African Americans who were treated as citizens hat were of a lower class; especially in the Southern part of the country. The African Americans were slaves and could be purchased and sold just like common commodity in the market. However, in my parents’ generation, the racism was toned down so that the first amendment was applied to all the individuals from different races; but there were still some places where non Caucasian members of the community were treated in a racist
