Obesity is a major problem throughout the United States that it has become a nationwide challenge to remain as active as possible. Throughout my first semester, I wanted to maintain my active lifestyle as much as I could, without gaining the formidable “freshman fifteen”. As a student athlete, there are mandatory workouts that help me meet my goal pertaining to physical fitness, but I wanted to expand upon those. Three days a week, in the morning, I have strength and conditioning sessions with my team. These are beneficial because I start off my day feeling accomplished. These workouts consist of weightlifting, cardio, and core training. In addition to the lifts, I try to go on a run or play intramural sports to stay in shape. I am currently part of an intramural volleyball team where we meet almost two to three times each week. Being active allows me to feel less disappointed when I overindulge due to stress of boredom. In high school, I would go to bed much earlier than my peers. I treasured my sleep, and I tried to get a full eight hours each night. During my first month of college, I was exhausted. I was unable to find a balance between socializing, school, and sleep. I would find myself falling asleep in class, which is something I never did in high school. As I got settled and found my group of friends, I really focused on getting more sleep. It’s much different than high school because midnight is a normal time for college students to be awake, while my house would be nearly quiet at that time. I have an 8:30am class two days a week and 6:30am lifts the other three days. Because of this, I try to get to bed around 10:30pm each night. Some nights, unfortunately, I don’t accomplish this feat, but I try my best to get some rest every chance I get. I have been getting better with sleeping a full eight hours, but sometimes I lose track of time. Because of the loss of sleep, people warned me about the importance of naps, and I never believed them. Now, I find naps essential whenever possible. Getting the right amount of sleep can change one’s mood in an instant, and I feel like a whole new person when I am
