My Health And Wellness

Health and wellness are simple words that present complex issues. There is no computable way to measure health and wellness because it changes from person to person. While I was preparing to enter my first year of college, people warned me about the difficulty to maintain a healthy lifestyle, whether it be the “freshman fifteen” or the unhealthy, friend cafeteria food. I wanted to break free of those stereotypes. As an athlete, my entire life, I was committed to continuing my health and fitness regimen away from home. However, college was exactly what everyone said it would be. College is a huge adjustment, and I needed a personal wellness plan to guide me in decision making regarding my health.

Obesity is a major problem throughout the United States that it has become a nationwide challenge to remain as active as possible. Throughout my first semester, I wanted to maintain my active lifestyle as much as I could, without gaining the formidable “freshman fifteen”. As a student athlete, there are mandatory workouts that help me meet my goal pertaining to physical fitness, but I wanted to expand upon those. Three days a week, in the morning, I have strength and conditioning sessions with my team. These are beneficial because I start off my day feeling accomplished. These workouts consist of weightlifting, cardio, and core training. In addition to the lifts, I try to go on a run or play intramural sports to stay in shape. I am currently part of an intramural volleyball team where we meet almost two to three times each week. Being active allows me to feel less disappointed when I overindulge due to stress of boredom. In high school, I would go to bed much earlier than my peers. I treasured my sleep, and I tried to get a full eight hours each night. During my first month of college, I was exhausted. I was unable to find a balance between socializing, school, and sleep. I would find myself falling asleep in class, which is something I never did in high school. As I got settled and found my group of friends, I really focused on getting more sleep. It’s much different than high school because midnight is a normal time for college students to be awake, while my house would be nearly quiet at that time. I have an 8:30am class two days a week and 6:30am lifts the other three days. Because of this, I try to get to bed around 10:30pm each night. Some nights, unfortunately, I don’t accomplish this feat, but I try my best to get some rest every chance I get. I have been getting better with sleeping a full eight hours, but sometimes I lose track of time. Because of the loss of sleep, people warned me about the importance of naps, and I never believed them. Now, I find naps essential whenever possible.     I can tell you that school starts at eight forty which means I have to be awake and in the shower by eight o’clock at the latest and out the door by eight thirty. I can also tell you that once I finish work, practice, and have my paper in by the eleven fifty-nine deadline, which I usually cut very close I can get to bed at around twelve thirty and get seven and a half hours of sleep, nowhere near the recommended ten.
